Overview
Moneyou is a Dutch financial services brand that began in 2001 as an online mortgage label initiated by Bouwfonds, a builder and mortgage lender, and later became a standalone subsidiary of ABN AMRO. Over its history it expanded beyond mortgages into savings deposits, savings accounts, the Moneyou Go online current account, and brokerage of revolving credit. Its savings products were fully online and covered by the Dutch deposit guarantee scheme. For several years it also offered a Groen Deposito (green deposit) linked to a freely withdrawable savings account, with the deposit itself placed at ABN AMRO Groenbank B.V. In its peak years Moneyou operated in the Netherlands as well as in Germany, Austria, and Belgium. It was still one of the smaller financial players in 2008 but invested heavily in internet and radio advertising, which helped build brand awareness. In early 2010 it won Het Gouden Spaarvarken, an award introduced in 2009 for the best-performing savings account without restrictive conditions. In 2020 ABN AMRO announced that Moneyou would end its savings and payment activities during 2021, a process completed in 2021. According to the bank, the low interest rate environment made it impossible for Moneyou to distinguish itself from other providers with an attractive savings rate. Moneyou Go closed on 15 April 2021 and Moneyou Sparen stopped on 5 July 2021. Moneyou Lenen transferred to DEFAM, a 100% subsidiary of ABN AMRO Bank, on 1 July 2021. The discontinuation of Moneyou Sparen and Betalen led to the loss of 150 jobs; temporary contracts were not renewed and a social plan was arranged for more than forty permanent employees. Some employees moved to fintech company TM-Pro, which took over the technology behind the Moneyou platform. Only the Moneyou mortgage label remained active, as part of ABN AMRO Hypotheken Groep. As of 12 November 2025, new customers can no longer take out a Moneyou mortgage; existing customers are unaffected. The brand continues to serve existing mortgage customers with information on rates, mortgage adjustments, and self-service management.
History
Moneyou B.V. is a Dutch financial services provider. It was founded in 2001 as an initiative of Bouwfonds, a builder and mortgage lender, initially as an online mortgage label. It later became a standalone subsidiary of ABN AMRO. In the Netherlands, Moneyou expanded beyond mortgages over time to offer savings deposits, savings accounts, and the Moneyou Go online current account. It also brokered revolving credit. Opening a savings account could be done entirely online, and both the regular savings account and deposits fell under the deposit guarantee scheme. For some years Moneyou also offered a Groen Deposito (green deposit) to customers, which could be taken out via the freely withdrawable savings account to which it was linked. The Groen Deposito itself was placed at ABN AMRO Groenbank B.V. Given the special conditions under which these deposits could be invested in government-recognized green projects, they were available only for a limited period of one year. In 2008 Moneyou was still one of the smaller financial players, but it made substantial advertising efforts on the internet and with radio commercials. The latter especially contributed to its brand awareness. In early 2010 Moneyou won Het Gouden Spaarvarken, an award introduced in 2009 for the best-performing savings account without restrictive conditions. In 2020 Moneyou announced it would cease its savings and payment activities during the course of 2021. According to the bank, it could no longer distinguish itself from other providers with an attractive savings rate due to the low interest rate environment. Moneyou Go closed on 15 April 2021 and Moneyou Sparen stopped on 5 July 2021. Moneyou Lenen transferred to DEFAM, a 100% subsidiary of ABN AMRO Bank, on 1 July 2021. The discontinuation of Moneyou Sparen and Betalen resulted in the loss of 150 jobs; temporary contracts were not renewed and a social plan followed for more than forty permanent employees. Some employees also moved to fintech company TM-Pro, which took over the technology behind the Moneyou platform. The Moneyou mortgage label remains active as part of ABN AMRO Hypotheken Groep. Internationally, Moneyou started activities in Germany in 2011. In 2018 it launched Tikkie in Germany, but the experiment did not catch on and was discontinued in 2019. Following positive experiences in the Netherlands, the Moneyou GO app was rolled out to German Moneyou customers in 2019. In 2020 Moneyou announced it would cease its savings and payment activities during 2021, citing the low interest rate environment. Moneyou Belgium was launched in 2012. In November 2019 Moneyou Belgium ceased to exist. The accounts of its 43,000 customers in Belgium were transferred to the Belgian online Keytrade Bank. Moneyou was active in Austria from October 2014 until mid-2019. As of 12 November 2025, new customers can no longer take out a Moneyou Hypotheek. Existing customers are unaffected, and the brand continues to provide mortgage rate information and self-service management for existing customers.
