Overview

MOSDO (also styled MOSDO!) is a joint business brand created by MOS Food Services, Inc., which operates MOS BURGER in Japan, and Duskin Co., Ltd., which operates Mister Donut in Japan. The two companies formed a capital and business alliance on February 20, 2008, and launched the MOSDO! joint venture. The trademarks 'MOSDO' (registration no. 5350610) and 'MOSDO!' (registration nos. 5259028, 5270115, and 5336821) are shared by both companies. The brand covers jointly developed menu items sold at the two chains as well as physical co-branded fast-food restaurants. The collaboration has produced several waves of co-developed products. The first, from July 23, 2008, saw MOS re-release its former standard Hot Chicken Burger for a limited time while Mister Donut offered a Hot Chicken Pie, supported by joint television commercials. The second wave, from May 12, 2009, featured MOS's Donut Burger (wasabi sauce) and Teri (wasabi sauce) alongside Mister Donut's burger-shaped Donut Burger and french-fry-shaped Potato doughnuts, with commercials starring Mari Yaguchi and Nozomi Tsuji. The third wave, from May 28, 2014, had MOS use Mister Donut's French Cruller as a bun for its French Cruller burgers, while Mister Donut adapted MOS's Rice Burger into its own rice burger items; commercials featured MOS's Shiori Kutsuna and Mister Donut's Matsuko Deluxe. In physical retail, MOSDO stores sell MOS hamburgers and side menus together with Mister Donut doughnuts and drinks. The first MOSDO-branded co-branded store opened on April 23, 2010, inside AEON Mall Hiroshima Fuchu, billed as Japan's first store where customers could order both hamburgers and doughnuts. A second store opened on Kyoto's Kawaramachi-dori on September 7, 2011, offering original menus rather than the chains' regular items, and closed on October 15, 2012. A Tokyo-area store opened in Ebisu on April 1, 2012, was renamed 'IN THE KITCHEN' on March 10, 2013, and closed on June 30, 2014. A Kansai International Airport shop opened on November 16, 2015, positioned as a flagship for western Japan, and closed on November 30, 2020. The AEON Mall Hiroshima Fuchu store temporarily closed in February 2015 for mall renovation and reopened on July 10, 2015, and again closed from February 8 to March 21, 2024, for renovation, reopening on March 22, 2024. A new store opened at LaLaport Shin-Misato on October 25, 2024, marking the brand's first Kanto store in 12 years. MOSDO remains an active collaboration brand, with its own special website at mosdo.jp and a history page documenting the partnership.

History

MOSDO originated from a capital and business alliance formed on February 20, 2008, between Duskin Co., Ltd., which operates Mister Donut in Japan, and MOS Food Services, Inc., which operates MOS BURGER. The two companies launched the joint business 'MOSDO!'. During joint product development, the name 'MOSDO!' (with exclamation mark) was used for the joint business, while at the time of the first store opening the brand name was 'MOSDO' (without exclamation mark) and the store logo was 'MOSDO!' (with exclamation mark). From the second store onward, 'MOSDO' (without exclamation mark) was adopted as the brand and store name. The trademarks 'MOSDO' (registration no. 5350610) and 'MOSDO!' (registration nos. 5259028, 5270115, and 5336821) are shared by both companies. The first jointly developed products launched on July 23, 2008: MOS re-released its former standard Hot Chicken Burger for a limited time, and Mister Donut simultaneously offered a Hot Chicken Pie. Joint television commercials were produced, with one version showing a Mister Donut employee eating a Hot Chicken Burger at MOS and another showing a MOS employee eating a Hot Chicken Pie at Mister Donut; most broadcasters aired them back to back. The second wave began on May 12, 2009, with MOS offering Donut Burger MOS (wasabi sauce) and Donut Burger Teri (wasabi sauce) — hamburgers with a hole in the center — while Mister Donut sold a burger-shaped doughnut called Donut Burger and a french-fry-shaped doughnut called Potato. The commercials starred Mari Yaguchi and Nozomi Tsuji. The third wave began on May 28, 2014: MOS used Mister Donut's flagship French Cruller as a bun for 'MOS's French Cruller (Guruguru Chorizo)' and 'MOS's French Cruller (Berry Chocolate)', while Mister Donut adapted MOS's flagship Rice Burger into 'Mister Donut's Rice Burger (Tantan Grilled Beef)' and 'Mister Donut's Rice Burger (An & Custard)'. The commercials featured MOS's commercial character Shiori Kutsuna and Mister Donut's commercial character Matsuko Deluxe. In physical retail, the first MOSDO-branded co-branded store opened on April 23, 2010, inside AEON Mall Hiroshima Fuchu (formerly AEON Mall Hiroshima Fuchu Soleil). It was Japan's first store where customers could order both hamburgers and doughnuts. Separate reception counters were provided for customers who wanted only one of the two, but sets combining both companies' menus were also sold. Initially, this first store's operating format was intended as a place to learn both companies' corporate cultures and operations, and it was said that similar stores would not be opened in future expansion. As of April 2024, the register system is Mister Donut's, so Mister Donut-issued coupons and gift certificates can be used but MOS-issued ones cannot. The store temporarily closed in February 2015 for the renovation of the entire AEON Mall and reopened on July 10, 2015. It again temporarily closed from February 8 to March 21, 2024, for renovation and reopened on March 22, 2024. MOSDO-exclusive burgers using Otafuku Sauce's okonomiyaki sauce, such as the 'Seafood Okonomiyaki-style Burger' and 'Seafood Okonomiyaki-style Rice Burger', have been sold. The second store opened on September 7, 2011, on Kawaramachi-dori in Kyoto. Unlike the first store, its menu did not include the two companies' regular items; instead it offered deli sandwiches and panini developed by MOS BURGER and desserts and baked doughnuts developed by Mister Donut. It closed on October 15, 2012. A Tokyo-area store opened on April 1, 2012, at the west exit of Ebisu Station in Shibuya, Tokyo — the first in the greater Tokyo area. It offered more than ten kinds of sandwiches as meal menus from MOS Food and hot cakes and Western confections as sweets from Duskin. The two-story store had 58 seats, all non-smoking, targeting nearby office workers in their 20s to 40s, with an assumed average spend of 680 yen. On March 10, 2013, it was renamed 'IN THE KITCHEN'. It closed on June 30, 2014; the site later became Mother Leaf Tea Style Ebisu operated by MOS and, as of 2024, MOS BURGER Ebisu Higashi. A Kansai International Airport shop opened on November 16, 2015, in Terminal 1 on the former site of a McDonald's and then First Kitchen. Inheriting the first store's concept, it was positioned as a flagship store for western Japan promoting the MOSDO and MOS/Mister Donut brands. To showcase the 'handmade! freshly made!' appeal of MOS and Mister Donut, the kitchens producing hamburgers and doughnuts were glass-walled. It closed on November 30, 2020. On October 25, 2024, a new store opened inside LaLaport Shin-Misato, marking the brand's first Kanto store in 12 years.
