History

Mumm Napa's roots can be traced back to G.H. Mumm, the leading international Champagne brand in France. In 1827, Jacobus, Gottlieb and Philipp Mumm established their Champagne house in Reims, France. In 1876, G.H. Mumm launched the Cordon Rouge cuvée. Between 1976 and 1979, G.H. Mumm sent winemaker Guy Devaux to discover the ideal winemaking area for growing traditional Champagne grapes in the United States. Established in California in the late 1970s, Mumm Napa follows traditional winemaking techniques of its French heritage. In 1983, using the French méthode traditionnelle, the first wine was produced under the name Domaine Mumm. In 1990, the name changed from Domaine Mumm to Mumm Napa and the winery opened to the public. In 1991, the Estate Vineyard, Devaux Ranch, was established in the Carneros Region of Napa Valley. In 2011, the winery was recognized with the Napa Green certification. In 2012, Mumm Napa became the first California sparkling winery to receive a 94 point rating from Wine Spectator. In 2020, Tami Lotz became Mumm Napa's first female winemaker. In 2022, 2023 and 2024, the winery was recognized as one of the best in North America.
