Overview

Neiman Marcus is an American luxury department-store brand founded in Dallas, Texas, in 1907 by Herbert Marcus, his sister Carrie Marcus Neiman, and her husband, Abraham Lincoln Neiman. The founders had previously participated in a successful sales-promotion business in Atlanta and used its proceeds to establish a fashion-focused retail store rather than invest in the then-emerging Coca-Cola business. The first store opened on September 10, 1907, and quickly attracted affluent Texas customers with merchandise and service that were unusually sophisticated for the regional market. The company built its identity around premium assortment, visual presentation, fashion authority, and highly personal service. After a fire destroyed the original store in 1914, Neiman Marcus reopened at a larger permanent location on Main Street and Ervay Street. Its assortment broadened beyond women's clothing to include accessories, lingerie, children's clothing, and later menswear. In 1927 it introduced what is described as the first weekly retail fashion show in the United States. During the Depression and the Second World War, the retailer added relatively lower-priced lines while maintaining an upscale reputation. Leadership by Stanley Marcus, who took operational control after the deaths of Herbert Marcus in 1950 and Carrie Neiman in 1952, shaped the brand's modern cultural profile. Stanley Marcus expanded fashion events, art-related merchandising, national advertising, celebrity and society engagement, and the Neiman Marcus Christmas Book. The annual Fortnight program, launched in 1957, presented the fashion, food, arts, and public figures of a selected country through elaborate events and became a major Dallas institution. The Christmas Book similarly became known for imaginative luxury gifts and theatrical presentation. Neiman Marcus expanded from its Dallas base through acquisitions and new stores. Its 1955 purchase of Houston retailer Ben Wolfman created its first location outside the Dallas–Fort Worth area. A NorthPark Center store opened in Dallas in 1965, and the company entered Florida in 1971 before developing a broader national store network. In 1968 it merged with Broadway-Hale Stores, later associated with Carter Hawley Hale, and in 1987 the Neiman Marcus business was separated from that parent. Bergdorf Goodman became part of the wider Neiman Marcus Group in 1987. Ownership subsequently moved through public-company and private-equity structures. The group was bought by Texas Pacific Group and Warburg Pincus in 2005, then acquired by Ares Management and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board in 2013. The group pursued digital and international initiatives, including a Chinese e-commerce partnership in 2012, the acquisition of Mytheresa in 2014, and a minority investment in luxury resale platform Fashionphile in 2019. Mytheresa was later separated and publicly listed. The COVID-19 disruption and the resulting collapse in store traffic pushed Neiman Marcus Group and affiliated debtors into Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May 2020. The company exited bankruptcy in September of that year under ownership by a consortium led by Davidson Kempner, Sixth Street Partners, and Pacific Investment Management. It subsequently emphasized digital commerce, customer analytics, luxury experiences, and younger clientele while retaining its store-based service model. In December 2024, Neiman Marcus became part of Saks Global through Saks' acquisition of Neiman Marcus Group. The brand continues to operate under the Neiman Marcus name and remains headquartered in Dallas. Its business includes luxury fashion, handbags, shoes, jewelry, beauty, and decorative home merchandise, sold through full-line stores and online channels. Store closures and portfolio changes have continued as the combined group manages debt, changing luxury-consumer behavior, and the economics of large department stores. History

Neiman Marcus began on September 10, 1907, when Herbert Marcus, Carrie Marcus Neiman, and Abraham Lincoln Neiman opened a Dallas department store financed by proceeds from an Atlanta promotion business. The founders chose fashion retail over an investment in the young Coca-Cola company. Their initial assortment sold rapidly, establishing a store aimed at affluent customers who wanted merchandise and presentation associated with larger fashion centers. A fire destroyed the original premises in 1914. The business operated temporarily for 17 days before moving to a permanent Main Street and Ervay Street location. The new store added accessories, lingerie, children's apparel, and expanded women's fashion. By 1927, it was staging weekly fashion shows. It also developed a tradition of highly theatrical events, including a 1936 Texas-themed presentation and, from 1957, the international Fortnight series. Menswear was added in 1929, while lower-priced lines were introduced during the Depression and wartime years to broaden the customer base without abandoning the store's premium identity. After Herbert Marcus died in 1950 and Carrie Neiman in 1952, Stanley Marcus became the dominant operating figure. He turned the retailer into a nationally recognized fashion and cultural brand through art exhibitions, editorial-quality advertising, elaborate fashion shows, celebrity relationships, and the Christmas Book. The Dallas business expanded with a Preston Center store in the 1950s and a larger NorthPark Center location in 1965. The 1955 acquisition of Ben Wolfman in Houston supplied the first branch outside the Dallas–Fort Worth region. A merger with Broadway-Hale Stores in 1968 provided capital and infrastructure for national growth, and the first store outside Texas opened in Bal Harbour, Florida, in 1971. The company was separated from Carter Hawley Hale in 1987 and became publicly listed, while remaining associated with the broader retail group until later ownership changes. Bergdorf Goodman joined the Neiman Marcus Group in 1987. In 2005 the group was taken private by Texas Pacific Group and Warburg Pincus. Ares Management and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board acquired it in 2013. During this period, the group pursued digital expansion, including a 2012 Chinese e-commerce partnership and the 2014 purchase of German luxury fashion platform Mytheresa. It also acquired a stake in Fashionphile in 2019, reflecting growing interest in luxury resale. In May 2020, Neiman Marcus Group filed for Chapter 11 protection with affiliated entities. The filing was attributed primarily to the pandemic's impact on physical retail. The group emerged in September 2020 under a consortium including Davidson Kempner, Sixth Street, and Pacific Investment Management. Mytheresa was later spun off and listed separately. Management subsequently focused on digital sales, customer data, experiential retail, and attracting younger luxury shoppers. Saks Global acquired Neiman Marcus Group in December 2024. The Neiman Marcus brand remained active and continued to operate luxury department stores and an e-commerce site under its established name. In the mid-2020s, the business faced store rationalization and the financial pressure affecting its parent. The historic Downtown Dallas flagship was the subject of closure plans and later retail-transition discussions, with NorthPark Center identified as the future flagship in the supplied reference material. These changes illustrate the brand's movement from a single iconic downtown store toward a more distributed, digitally supported luxury-retail model.
