Overview

Netwrix is a privately held information-security software company headquartered in Frisco, Texas. Founded in Russia in 2006 by Mike Walters and Alex Vovk, the company initially concentrated on auditing changes in Microsoft Active Directory environments. Its first product, released in 2007, provided change-auditing functionality for Active Directory and later became part of the Change Reporter Suite. The suite was subsequently renamed Netwrix Auditor, establishing the product line that became central to the company's identity and market presence. Netwrix develops software intended to help organizations understand, protect, and govern sensitive, regulated, and business-critical information. Its product scope has expanded beyond traditional change auditing into data discovery and classification, data loss prevention, identity governance, privileged access management, password and endpoint policy enforcement, vulnerability and configuration management, and security assessment. The company's flagship offerings include Netwrix Auditor and Netwrix Enterprise Auditor, which support visibility into activity, access, configuration changes, and compliance-related risks across enterprise environments. The company grew through a combination of internal product development, outside investment, partnerships, and acquisitions. It received Series A financing from Updata Partners in 2017 and a majority investment from TA Associates in 2020. From 2018 onward, Netwrix added capabilities through acquisitions including Concept Searching, Stealthbits Technologies, Strongpoint, New Net Technologies, ANIXIS, PolicyPak, USERCUBE, MATESO, IMANAMI, Remediant, CoSoSys, and PingCastle. These transactions broadened the portfolio from auditing and governance into identity administration, privileged access, data loss prevention, password management, endpoint controls, and Active Directory security assessment. Netwrix operates across the United States, EMEA, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and other international markets. It has described partnerships with major technology and security vendors including Microsoft, VMware, EMC, NetApp, and HP ArcSight. In 2024, Grady Summers succeeded Steve Dickson as chief executive officer, while Dickson remained on the company's board. In 2025, Netwrix introduced an open-source Model Context Protocol server connected to Netwrix Access Analyzer, allowing supported AI assistants to query security information using natural language. The initiative reflects the company's effort to apply agentic and conversational AI to cybersecurity operations. Netwrix remains a private enterprise-security vendor rather than a publicly traded company. Its overall positioning combines data security, identity security, information governance, and operational visibility for organizations that need to identify sensitive information, control access, investigate changes, and demonstrate compliance.

History

Netwrix was founded in Russia in 2006 by Mike Walters and Alex Vovk. The company entered the market with software for auditing changes in Microsoft Active Directory, releasing its first product in 2007. That product later became part of the Change Reporter Suite, which developed into the company's principal auditing platform and was eventually renamed Netwrix Auditor. In 2011, Netwrix released an SCOM Management Pack for the Change Reporter Suite. The integration connected its auditing capabilities with Microsoft System Center Operations Manager. The company continued to refine its Active Directory products, releasing a new version of Active Directory Change Reporter in November 2012. In June 2013, the flagship Change Reporter product was formally renamed Netwrix Auditor, reinforcing a broader positioning around IT auditing, compliance, and security visibility rather than a single directory platform. Netwrix obtained Series A financing from Updata Partners on 7 February 2017. On 5 April 2018, Steve Dickson became chief executive officer, replacing co-founder Mike Walters; co-founder Alex Vovk also left the president position. Later that year, on 28 November, Netwrix acquired Concept Searching Limited, adding data classification technology to its portfolio. In August 2019, the company formed a strategic partnership with Mott MacDonald to provide data classification technology to clients. In October 2020, TA Associates made a majority investment in Netwrix. The company then accelerated its expansion through mergers and acquisitions. On 4 January 2021, Netwrix merged with Stealthbits Technologies, whose products addressed data security and privacy. It acquired ANIXIS in March 2021 for password-policy enforcement capabilities, Strongpoint in February 2021 for compliance, change-management, and access-management tools for Salesforce and NetSuite, and New Net Technologies in June 2021 for change, configuration, vulnerability, and asset-management software. PolicyPak, acquired in October 2021, added software for managing on-premises and remote Windows 10 desktop policies. The acquisition program continued in 2022. Netwrix acquired France-based USERCUBE in August for identity governance and administration technology, Germany-based MATESO in September for enterprise password management, US-based IMANAMI in November for identity and access management around Microsoft Active Directory environments, and Remediant in December for privileged-access management focused on identifying and removing persistent administrative access. In February 2024, Netwrix acquired CoSoSys, adding endpoint data loss prevention technology. In August 2024, it acquired France-based PingCastle, whose software provided Active Directory discovery and assessment capabilities. On 14 October 2024, the company transferred the CEO role from Steve Dickson to Grady Summers; Dickson remained on the board. Netwrix's business now spans data security, information governance, identity security, privileged access, endpoint protection, password management, configuration and vulnerability management, and Active Directory assessment. It operates across the United States, EMEA, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and other markets. In April 2025, the company introduced an open-source Model Context Protocol server connected to Netwrix Access Analyzer. The integration allows AI assistants such as Claude and Microsoft Copilot to query security data in natural language, including information about sensitive-data exposure, access risks, and stale accounts. The company stated that future MCP support was planned for Privilege Secure and Threat Manager.
