Overview
Newmark Group is a commercial real estate advisory and services company headquartered in New York City. It provides brokerage, investment sales, capital markets, leasing, tenant and landlord representation, valuation, appraisal, property management, project and construction management, corporate real estate consulting, retail and multifamily advisory, mortgage banking, title services, and flexible-workspace solutions. Its clients include corporations, institutional investors, developers, landlords, government bodies, nonprofit organizations, financial institutions, and occupiers of office, industrial, retail, multifamily, hospitality, and other property types. The business traces its origins to Newmark & Company, founded in Manhattan in 1929 by Dave Newmark. A major formative period began in the 1950s, when Aaron Gural joined the company, acquired it with partners in 1956, and led it for several decades. Under Gural, the firm expanded from brokerage into property ownership and management, acquiring or investing in notable Manhattan properties and developing expertise in the restoration and repositioning of older industrial and loft buildings. Jeffrey Gural and Barry Gosin took ownership in 1978. During the late 1980s and 1990s, Gosin emphasized brokerage and advisory activities as New York's property market faced difficult conditions, while James Kuhn joined as president in 1992 and helped broaden the firm's institutional capabilities. Newmark expanded beyond its traditional New York base through acquisitions, partnerships, and new service lines. Its 2006 partnership with London-based Knight Frank created the Newmark Knight Frank identity. In 2011, BGC Partners acquired Newmark, bringing the real estate platform into the wider financial-services group associated with Cantor Fitzgerald. BGC subsequently combined Newmark with the assets of Grubb & Ellis in 2012, creating Newmark Grubb Knight Frank and accelerating national expansion. Further acquisitions added brokerage offices, appraisal and consulting capabilities, multifamily expertise, retail advisory, capital markets, tenant representation, title services, and flexible-office operations. The company entered the public markets in December 2017. It later simplified its market identity: Newmark Knight Frank formally became Newmark in 2020. Expansion continued through acquisitions such as Knotel and Deskeo in flexible workspace, BH2, Open Realty Advisors, Open Realty Properties, McCall & Almy, and Gerald Eve. The firm has also developed an international network through operations and partnerships in the Americas, Europe, and other markets. Newmark is positioned as a full-service commercial real estate platform combining transaction advice with capital markets, valuation, consulting, property operations, and specialized sector expertise. Industry rankings cited in the reference material placed it among the leading commercial brokerage and investment-sales firms in the Americas. The company remains an active public corporation, with Barry Gosin serving as chief executive officer and taking an additional operating-company chair role in 2025 after Howard Lutnick entered the United States government as Commerce Secretary.
History
Newmark began in Manhattan in 1929, when Dave Newmark founded the company that became Newmark & Company. Aaron Gural joined in 1953 and acquired the business with partners in 1956. As chairman from 1957 to 1998, Gural broadened the company's activities beyond brokerage by acquiring and managing Manhattan properties, including 230 Fifth Avenue, the Film Center Building, and the DuMont building. He was also associated with the redevelopment potential of older industrial properties and loft buildings on Manhattan's West Side and in the Garment District. Jeffrey Gural and Barry Gosin took ownership in 1978. During a downturn in New York real estate in the late 1980s, Gosin expanded the brokerage and advisory side of the business. The combination of transaction services and a substantial investment portfolio became an important part of the firm's identity. James Kuhn joined as president in 1992 after managing the Mendik Company, bringing experience in office and apartment acquisitions. During the 1990s, Newmark continued acquiring and managing properties, including an interest in the Flatiron Building, and expanded corporate-services activities. The company began building a broader institutional and geographic platform in the 2000s. It invested in national appraisal firm Koeppel Tener in 2001 and formed a partnership with Knight Frank in 2006, adopting the Newmark Knight Frank name. In October 2011, BGC Partners acquired Newmark. Howard Lutnick became chairman, while Barry Gosin remained chief executive and Jeffrey Gural became chairman emeritus. In 2012, BGC acquired the assets of Grubb & Ellis and combined them with Newmark, creating Newmark Grubb Knight Frank. Other acquisitions during this period added regional brokerage, consulting, appraisal, multifamily, retail, tenant-representation, and capital-advisory capabilities. Newmark and its parent expanded through a long series of acquisitions. These included Frederick Ross, Smith Mack, Cornish & Carey Commercial, Apartment Realty Advisors, Cincinnati Commercial Real Estate, Steffner Commercial Real Estate, CRE Group, Rudesill-Para Multifamily, Walchle Lear, Regency Capital Partners, Jackson & Cooksey, RKF, Harper Dennis Hobbs, MiT National Land Services, Hopkins Appraisal Services, Knotel, Deskeo, BH2, Open Realty Advisors, Open Realty Properties, and McCall & Almy. The company also expanded internationally through South American partnerships and a growing United Kingdom and European presence. Newmark Group became a Nasdaq-listed company in December 2017. In October 2020, Newmark Knight Frank formally rebranded as Newmark. The company subsequently added flexible-office capabilities and continued its international expansion, including the announced acquisition of Gerald Eve in 2023. Its present business covers a wide range of commercial real estate services, from brokerage and capital markets to valuation, property management, project management, corporate advisory, mortgage banking, title services, and flexible workspace. In 2025, leadership arrangements changed after Howard Lutnick became U.S. Commerce Secretary: Barry Gosin took an additional chair role at the operating company, Stephen Merkel became chairman of the board, Kyle Lutnick joined the board, and Luis Alvarado became chief operating officer.
