Overview
NFI Group is a Canadian multinational bus-manufacturing group headquartered in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The company develops, manufactures, distributes, and supports buses and related equipment for public-transit agencies, private operators, school and shuttle fleets, and other commercial customers. Its portfolio spans heavy-duty transit buses, medium-duty and cutaway vehicles, motorcoaches, double-deck buses, bus body components, and aftermarket parts. The group was created on June 16, 2005, as a holding company for New Flyer Industries, enabling the underlying business to be publicly traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange. New Flyer had established its position primarily through the manufacture of heavy-duty transit buses for the North American market. Over time, NFI broadened that focus through acquisitions, adding businesses with capabilities in motorcoaches, smaller and medium-duty buses, European transit vehicles, double-deck buses, aftermarket support, and composite components. A significant stage in this expansion began in 2013. New Flyer acquired the Orion aftermarket-parts business after Daimler withdrew Orion from the North American heavy-duty transit-bus market. In the same year, it agreed to purchase North American Bus Industries, adding another major North American bus operation and the Anniston, Alabama manufacturing site. The Anniston facility was subsequently adapted for production of New Flyer’s Xcelsior heavy-duty transit bus. NFI expanded further into intercity and luxury coach markets with its 2015 acquisition of Motor Coach Industries, a prominent motorcoach manufacturer. In 2017 it acquired ARBOC Specialty Vehicles, extending the portfolio into low-floor medium-duty and cutaway buses. In 2019, NFI purchased British manufacturer Alexander Dennis, together with its Plaxton subsidiary. That transaction gave the group a substantial presence in the United Kingdom and strengthened its position in double-deck buses, transit vehicles, and coaches. The group’s principal operating brands and businesses include New Flyer, Alexander Dennis, ARBOC Specialty Vehicles, Motor Coach Industries, Plaxton, NFI Parts, and Carfair Composites. New Flyer focuses on heavy-duty transit buses; Alexander Dennis manufactures transit and double-deck buses; ARBOC supplies medium-duty and cutaway vehicles; Motor Coach Industries produces motorcoaches; Plaxton serves coach markets, particularly in Europe; NFI Parts supports operators with replacement components; and Carfair Composites supplies fiberglass and other composite structures. NFI serves customers across North America and in selected international markets through manufacturing, sales, parts, and service operations. The company has described a workforce of approximately 9,000 people working across about 50 facilities in nine countries. Its business is closely connected to public transportation investment, fleet replacement cycles, accessibility requirements, emissions regulation, and the transition toward battery-electric and other lower-emission buses. NFI is listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbol NFI and is a constituent of the S&P/TSX Composite Index.
History
NFI Group’s modern corporate structure dates to June 16, 2005, when it was created as a holding company for New Flyer Industries. The arrangement allowed the New Flyer business to be publicly traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange while retaining its identity as a bus-manufacturing operation headquartered in Winnipeg, Manitoba. At that stage, the company’s main emphasis was the North American heavy-duty transit-bus market. The business received employer recognition in 2008. NFI Group was included among Canada’s Top 100 Employers, and New Flyer was separately recognized as one of Manitoba’s Top Employers. In October 2011, the company changed from a trust-like structure to a corporate structure, simplifying its legal and organizational form. NFI’s largest phase of expansion began in 2013. On January 23, Brazilian bus manufacturer Marcopolo purchased a 19.99 percent interest in New Flyer for US$116 million. That level represented the maximum stake Marcopolo could acquire without making an offer for the remaining shareholders. Marcopolo later reduced its ownership to 10.8 percent in September 2016, while remaining the largest individual shareholder at that time. Also in 2013, New Flyer purchased the aftermarket-parts business associated with Daimler’s Orion heavy-duty transit buses for US$29 million. The transaction included Orion parts inventory, customer accounts, licenses to use proprietary part designs, and obligations related to customer warranty support. The deal allowed New Flyer to continue supporting an installed fleet after Daimler withdrew Orion from the North American market. On June 21, 2013, New Flyer agreed to acquire North American Bus Industries, commonly known as NABI, for US$80 million. NABI was a competing heavy-duty transit-bus manufacturer. After completing NABI’s outstanding orders, New Flyer converted the company’s Anniston, Alabama plant into another manufacturing facility for the Xcelsior heavy-duty transit-bus line. The purchase increased New Flyer’s production capacity and broadened its North American operating base. NFI then moved decisively into motorcoaches. On November 10, 2015, it agreed to buy Motor Coach Industries from KPS Capital Partners for US$459 million. The transaction closed on December 18, 2015. Motor Coach Industries added intercity, charter, and luxury-coach capabilities to a group previously centered on transit buses. On December 1, 2017, NFI acquired ARBOC Specialty Vehicles for US$95 million. Based in Middlebury, Indiana, ARBOC manufactured small cutaway and medium-duty buses, complementing NFI’s existing heavy-duty products and allowing it to address smaller fleet and specialized transportation requirements. The group’s most significant international acquisition was announced on May 28, 2019, when NFI agreed to purchase Alexander Dennis from Souter Investments for £320 million. The deal included Plaxton, Alexander Dennis’s coach subsidiary. Alexander Dennis brought heavy-duty transit buses and double-deck buses, while Plaxton strengthened NFI’s coach presence in European markets. Through these transactions, NFI evolved from a predominantly North American heavy-duty transit-bus company into a diversified bus and mobility-equipment group. Its portfolio came to include New Flyer, Alexander Dennis, ARBOC Specialty Vehicles, Motor Coach Industries, Plaxton, NFI Parts, and Carfair Composites. The group’s activities cover vehicle manufacturing, composite structures, aftermarket parts, and customer support. NFI’s current identity is therefore based on a multi-brand platform rather than a single vehicle line. Its markets are influenced by public-transit procurement, fleet modernization, accessibility standards, energy-transition policies, and demand for intercity and specialized transportation. The group remains publicly listed in Canada under the symbol NFI and is included in the S&P/TSX Composite Index.

Products and positioning
A vertically integrated international bus and mobility-equipment group serving public transit, coach, shuttle, and aftermarket customers.
Heavy-duty transit buses
New Flyer transit buses
New Flyer is NFI’s core North American transit-bus business. It manufactures heavy-duty buses for public transportation systems and has offered conventional and lower-emission platforms, including the Xcelsior family. The business serves agencies and fleet operators requiring high-capacity urban vehicles, accessible layouts, and long-term parts and service support.
Transit and double-deck buses
Alexander Dennis buses
Alexander Dennis supplies transit buses for urban and regional operators, including double-deck vehicles that are particularly important in the United Kingdom and other markets. Its products broaden NFI’s geographic reach and add specialized experience in high-capacity bus design, fleet integration, and international public-transport procurement.
Medium-duty and cutaway buses
ARBOC Specialty Vehicles
ARBOC manufactures small cutaway and medium-duty buses for specialized transportation, shuttle, community, and paratransit-type applications. Its vehicles complement NFI’s heavy-duty transit range by addressing lower-capacity routes and operators that need smaller accessible buses or purpose-built bodies on commercial chassis.
Motorcoaches
Motor Coach Industries
Motor Coach Industries produces motorcoaches for intercity, charter, tour, shuttle, and other long-distance applications. The brand added a distinct coach and private-operator business to NFI’s historically transit-focused portfolio, giving the group access to customers outside municipal fixed-route transportation.
Coaches
Plaxton
Plaxton is a coach business acquired with Alexander Dennis. It produces coach bodies and vehicles for European markets and complements NFI’s North American motorcoach operations. The brand provides additional reach in the intercity and private-coach sectors while remaining part of the broader Alexander Dennis organization.
Aftermarket bus parts
NFI Parts
NFI Parts supplies replacement components and aftermarket support for bus operators and fleets. Its role includes supporting vehicles in service beyond the initial sale and helping customers maintain availability across different NFI brands and supported legacy products, including the Orion parts business acquired in 2013.
Composite bus components
Carfair Composites
Carfair Composites supplies fiberglass and other composite components used in bus manufacturing. The business gives NFI an in-house or affiliated capability in body and structural component production, supporting vehicle programs across the group’s manufacturing operations.
