Nidek Co., Ltd. was established in July 1971 and founded in August 1971. According to its official website, its corporate purpose since its 1971 founding has been to deliver "sight" to the world and to create technology that contributes to ophthalmic medicine. Its business areas presented on the official site include ophthalmic medical equipment, health screening equipment, eyeglass equipment, coating, and other businesses. The company marked its 50th anniversary in August 2021 and held a 55th anniversary ceremony in 2026.

Nidek Co., Ltd. was established in July 1971 with capital of 10 million yen and founded in August 1971. In May 1972 it began development of the xenon photocoagulator "XC-550A" and entered the ophthalmic field for the first time, and it also began an eyeglass lens coating business. In 1979 Nidek Sales Co., Ltd. was established. In January 1980 it announced the domestically produced auto-refractometer "AR-2000". In 1982 NIDEK INC. (USA) was established, followed by NIDEK S.A. (France) in 1988 and NIDEK TECHNOLOGIES INC. (USA) in 1988. In 1996 it announced the new business domain "Eye & Health Care". In April 2004 Nidek Co., Ltd. and Nidek Sales Co., Ltd. merged. In June 2009 founder Hideo Ozawa passed away at age 79. In July 2012 Nidek Medical Equipment Trading (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. (China) was established. The company marked its 50th anniversary in August 2021 and held a 55th anniversary ceremony in 2026.
