Overview

Nous Horitzons is a quarterly magazine written in Catalan, dedicated to political and cultural analysis. It was founded in 1960 under the name Horitzons and adopted its current title in 1962. The publication is closely associated with the Fundació Nous Horitzons, a foundation created in 1993 by the PSUC (Unified Socialist Party of Catalonia) and Iniciativa per Catalunya. Initially clandestine, during the Francoist dictatorship the editorial office operated from Mexico, staffed by exiled PSUC leaders. The first issues were entirely produced in Mexico and smuggled into Spain; from issue number 9 onward, the printing plates were prepared in France and then printed clandestinely in Catalonia. The magazine was finally legalized in 1977. During its Mexican period it was directed by Francesc Vicens i Giralt, and when the editorial office moved to Catalonia, Manuel Sacristán became director. Francesc Vallverdú served as secretary, and the editorial team included figures such as Josep Fontana, Josep Termes, and Xavier Folch. Its regular contributors have included Rafael Vidiella i Franch, Gaspar Aribau, Gregori López Raimundo, Pere Ardiaca, N. Pla, Manuel Sacristán, Giulia Adinolfi, Jordi Solé Tura, Francesc Vallverdú i Canes, J. Sempere, Rafael Ribó, Manuel Vázquez Montalbán, Núria Sales i Folch, Joaquim Molas, Oriol Bohigas, and Teresa Pàmies, among others. The magazine has preferentially addressed themes related to Catalan social reality and the national question, but literary criticism has also been an important component. From its origins it maintained a Marxist perspective, to which other intellectual currents have been added in recent times.
