Overview
NX Engineering Co., Ltd. (NXエンジニアリング株式会社) is a Japanese logistics and engineering company headquartered in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of NIPPON EXPRESS HOLDINGS, INC., the holding company of the NIPPON EXPRESS Group. The company specializes in the transport, installation, and assembly of extremely heavy and oversized cargo — large transformers, Shinkansen rolling stock, wind turbine components, LNG and hydrogen power generation equipment, petrochemical plant equipment, semiconductor manufacturing equipment, and transport infrastructure components. The company's roots go back to November 1941, when Nippon Express Co., Ltd. established a Heavy Cargo Section (重量品課) within its Land Transport Department. Over the following decades this unit grew into the Heavy Machinery Construction Department (重機建設部, 1972) and then the Heavy Machinery Construction Division (重機建設事業部, 2006), building a reputation for handling some of Japan's most demanding heavy-lift projects. Its track record includes transporting the 0-series Shinkansen, supporting the Japan World Exposition (Osaka), Tsukuba Expo, and Aichi Expo, and participating in the transport and erection of the Grand Ring for Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai. It has also been involved in the University of Tokyo Atacama Observatory (TAO) telescope project in Chile, at an altitude of 5,640 m. In January 2024, NX Engineering Co., Ltd. was established, and in January 2025 it succeeded the heavy cargo construction business from Nippon Express Co., Ltd. via a company split (会社分割). Notably, it is not a subsidiary of Nippon Express Co., Ltd. but a direct wholly owned subsidiary of NIPPON EXPRESS HOLDINGS. The company holds licenses for general motor truck transportation as well as construction business. NX Engineering operates through domestic branches and bases across Japan and overseas subsidiaries in Thailand (NX Engineering Thailand), Vietnam (NX Engineering Vietnam), and Singapore (NX Global Engineering). Its services cover heavy cargo transport, installation and erection, and assembly, with a stated mission to be "No.1 in 'transport, install, assemble'" for customers, employees, and the environment.
History
The origins of NX Engineering lie in the Heavy Cargo Section (重量品課) established in November 1941 within the Land Transport Department of Nippon Express Co., Ltd. In 1959, the company carried out its first transport using a 300-ton trailer. In 1961, it introduced a Schnabel-type 210-ton trailer, and in 1969 it became the first in Japan to introduce a self-propelled 400-ton dolly, described as a "revolution in heavy cargo transport." A 500-ton trailer followed in 1971. In October 1972, the Heavy Machinery Construction Department (重機建設部) was established, with sections for operations, engineering, heavy electrical equipment, and plant. In 1980, a Heavy Machinery Construction branch of Nippon Express Singapore was established. In 1990, Thai Nippon Express Engineering (now NX Engineering Thailand) was founded. In 1993, a 240-type Schnabel trailer was introduced. In 2003, the company obtained a patent for a "blade upright running device" for transporting wind turbine blades of up to about 40 meters by tilting and rotating them. In October 2005, the organization shifted to a divisional system, and in April 2006 the Heavy Machinery Construction Division was formally launched. In October 2013, the Heavy Electrical and Wind Power Group was established, followed by the IT and Industrial Machinery Group in October 2014. Also in 2014, Vietnam Nippon Express Engineering (now NX Engineering Vietnam) was founded, and a 1,350-ton crawler crane was introduced. In 2016, NEX Global Engineering (now NX Global Engineering) was established in Singapore. In March 2019, the Thermal Power Group was launched. In January 2022, the company transitioned to the NXHD structure. In 2023, the Road Infrastructure Group was established in January and the R&D Group in July. In January 2024, NX Engineering Co., Ltd. was established, and in January 2025 it succeeded the heavy cargo construction business from Nippon Express Co., Ltd. through a company split. The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of NIPPON EXPRESS HOLDINGS, not of Nippon Express Co., Ltd. Throughout its history, the division has handled numerous landmark projects: transporting the 0-series Shinkansen, supporting the Japan World Exposition (Osaka), Tsukuba Expo, and Aichi Expo, and participating in the transport and erection of the Grand Ring for Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai. It has also been involved in the University of Tokyo Atacama Observatory (TAO) telescope project in Chile, at an altitude of 5,640 m, and in the construction of Japan's largest offshore wind farm.
