Overview

Oculus Quest is the standalone virtual-reality headset product line created by Facebook's Oculus VR division (now Meta Reality Labs). Announced in 2018 and released in May 2019, the original Quest was notable for delivering six-degrees-of-freedom room-scale VR with inside-out tracking and no need for a PC or external sensors — a self-contained console-like device priced for consumers. It succeeded the earlier Oculus Go and complemented the PC-tethered Oculus Rift line. A second-generation Quest 2 arrived in October 2020, built on Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2 platform, lighter and cheaper than the original, and it became the volume driver of the consumer VR market. In 2021 Facebook reorganized its VR and AR work under the Meta brand; in 2022 the hardware line dropped the Oculus name and became Meta Quest, with the Quest 2 continuing and the higher-end Quest Pro launching that year. Quest 3 followed in 2023 with mixed-reality color passthrough, and Quest 3S in 2024 as a lower-cost entry point. The brand sits inside Meta Platforms, Inc., a publicly listed company (NASDAQ: META), and is sold direct through Meta's own store and retail partners across North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific. Its positioning is consumer-first standalone VR/MR: no PC required, a curated app and game store, and social/metaverse tie-ins through Meta accounts. The Quest line is widely credited with moving VR from tethered PC accessories toward mass-market standalone headsets.

History

Oculus VR was founded in 2012 and its Kickstarter-backed Rift headset helped restart consumer interest in virtual reality; Facebook acquired Oculus in 2014. The company's early consumer products were the mobile-powered Oculus Go (2018) and the PC-tethered Oculus Rift. The Quest was announced in September 2018 as 'Oculus Quest,' a standalone headset with inside-out tracking and Touch controllers, and shipped on May 21, 2019 at a consumer price point. It ran a modified Android-based system with its own store, and was positioned as the first mass-market six-degrees-of-freedom standalone VR device. Oculus Quest 2 launched in October 2020, using Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2 chip, with a lighter body, higher-resolution display and a lower starting price than the original; it became the best-selling headset of its generation. In October 2021 Facebook renamed itself Meta Platforms, and in 2022 the VR hardware was rebranded from Oculus Quest to Meta Quest, with the Oculus name retired from product branding. Meta Quest Pro, a higher-priced headset aimed at work and mixed reality, launched in late 2022. Quest 3 arrived in October 2023 with color passthrough mixed reality and a next-generation chip, and Quest 3S in October 2024 as a budget-friendly model sharing Quest 3 internals. The brand has been central to Meta's 'metaverse' strategy and to Reality Labs, the division that houses its VR/AR hardware and software. Quest headsets are sold through Meta's online store and retail partners, and the platform's app store, subscription services and social apps (including Horizon Worlds) form the content side of the brand.
