Overview
Onomastica is an annual scholarly journal dedicated to onomastics — the study of proper names — published by the Institute of Polish Language of the Polish Academy of Sciences (Instytut Języka Polskiego PAN). It has appeared continuously since 1955, making it the first journal in the Slavic countries devoted exclusively to onomastics. The journal publishes original theoretical, data-driven and overview articles, book reviews, notes and reports concerning proper names in all their aspects and varieties, including geographical names, personal names and other proper names. Articles appear in various modern languages, mainly Polish, German, Czech, Slovak, Russian and English. The journal was initially published in Wrocław until 1991 and has been published in Kraków since 1992. From 1975 the publisher has been the Committee on Linguistics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, joined in 2012 by the Institute of Polish Language of the Polish Academy of Sciences. In 2002 a subtitle was introduced — 'Pismo poświęcone nazewnictwu geograficznemu i osobowemu oraz innym nazwom własnym' (A journal devoted to geographical and personal naming and other proper names) — which was changed in 2015 to 'Pismo poświęcone teorii i interpretacji nazw własnych' (A journal devoted to the theory and interpretation of proper names). Between 1956 and 1975 two issues appeared per year; since 1976 one issue is published annually. By 2023, 67 volumes had appeared. Onomastica is internationally renowned and its editors cooperate on a permanent basis with universities abroad and with periodicals of similar profile. From 2019 (issue 63), the original version of the journal is the electronic version, and each article has a DOI number. Full texts of articles with abstracts and keywords are published on the journal's website, and a paper version is also published. The journal is listed on the list of scientific journals of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education (70 points), is listed on ERIH Plus, and is indexed in databases including Scopus, DOAJ, Brill Bibliography of Slavic Linguistics Online (BSLO), Crossref, CEJSH, PBN, BazHum and Most Wiedzy. The journal has been edited by eminent Polish linguists such as Witold Taszycki, Mieczysław Karaś, Kazimierz Rymut, Aleksandra Cieślikowa, Barbara Czopek-Kopciuch and Urszula Bijak. The current editor-in-chief is Halszka Górny. The editorial team of volume 69 (2025) includes Paweł Swoboda, Urszula Bijak, Bogumił Ostrowski, Katarzyna Skowronek and Justyna B. Walkowiak. The journal's contact address is Al. Mickiewicza 31, 31-120 Kraków, Poland. It carries ISSN 0078-4648 (print) and e-ISSN 2658-2783 (online).
