Overview

Orskov Yard A/S is a Danish ship repair and conversion yard based in Frederikshavn, in the heart of Scandinavia. Its roots go back to 1958, when Arne Ørskov Christensen founded Ørskov Christensens Steel Shipyard (Ørskov Christensen Stålskibsværft A/S) as a newbuilding yard. For decades the company built fishing vessels, coastal motor ships, research vessels, ferries, reefer ships, container ship designs and offshore supply vessels. Facing intensifying competition from lower-cost Far Eastern yards, the family gave up newbuilding in 2003 and repositioned the business as a pure repair and conversion yard under the name Orskov Yard A/S. Today Orskov Yard describes itself as a one-stop shipyard that repairs and converts all types of vessels and offers an extensive range of services. It operates around the clock — 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year — and works in close cooperation with specialised and trusted partner companies, coordinated by its own project managers and foremen. The yard's service portfolio covers steel constructions, piping and refrigeration, engine and mechanical service, hydraulic services, electrical services, interior and insulation, surface treatment, cleaning services, life-saving equipment and sustainable solutions. It has particular experience with ballast water treatment system installation and ultra-high-pressure water blasting using robots, and it markets vessel upgrades that reduce energy consumption and pollution. Orskov Yard is triple certified according to ISO 9001 (quality), ISO 14001 (environment) and ISO 45001 (occupational health and safety). It publishes a safety manual in several language versions, including UK, Danish, Polish and Romanian. The yard is family owned and has been for more than 60 years. Since 2015 the executive board has consisted of Christina Ørskov and Lars Fischer, following the death of Jeppe Ørskov. The company operates four floating docks and employs roughly 230 people, attracting customers from all over the world to Frederikshavn.

History

Orskov Yard's history begins in 1958, when Arne Ørskov Christensen founded Ørskov Christensens Steel Shipyard (Ørskov Christensen Stålskibsværft A/S) in Frederikshavn, Denmark. The yard started as a pure newbuilding shipyard and in its early years built series of fishing vessels. From 1961 it also began building numerous coastal motor ships, and the yard was rapidly expanded in the following years. In 1968 it built a research vessel for the first time, and at the beginning of the 1970s significantly larger coastal motor ships entered its construction programme. In 1972 the founder handed over leadership to his son Niels Ørskov Christensen, under whose direction the size of the vessels offered continued to grow. During the 1980s the range of units built was extended to include authority vessels, ferries and reefer ships. In the 1990s container ship designs such as the Orskov Mk V, Orskov Mk VI, Orskov O-type, Orskov Mk VII and Orskov Mk X, as well as gas tankers and Rolls-Royce type UT 722 offshore supply vessels, were added to the offering. However, during the 1990s it became increasingly difficult to win newbuilding orders because competitors from the Far East offered significantly lower construction prices. In 2003 Niels Ørskov Christensen finally abandoned the newbuilding sector, and Orskov Yard A/S was re-founded as a pure repair yard, with Jeppe Ørskov as Managing Director and his sister Christina Ørskov as Chairman of the Board. The official history timeline records that in 2003 focus changed: instead of building new ships, the shipyard now focused on repair and conversion of ships, and the next generation took over responsibility with Jeppe Ørskov as Managing Director and Christina Ørskov as Chairman of the Board. In 2014 Orskov Yard was triple certified with ISO 9001, 14011 and 18001 certifications (the official homepage now cites ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001). Jeppe Ørskov passed away in 2015, and since 2015 the Executive Board has consisted of Christina Ørskov and Lars Fischer. In January 2021 the new floating dock was ready for operation — a milestone that expanded the yard's capacity and customer range. Today the company operates a ship repair yard with four floating docks and employs about 230 people, describing itself as a one-stop shipyard in Frederikshavn, in the heart of Scandinavia, repairing and converting all types of vessels around the clock.
