Overview

Ostseestaal GmbH & Co. KG is a metalworking company headquartered in the German Hanseatic city of Stralsund. It belongs to the Dutch Central Industry Group, based in Groningen. The company produces kits made from cut and three-dimensionally formed sheet metal in steel, stainless steel, aluminium and special alloys for shipbuilding and the metalworking industry. It is counted among the large maritime suppliers in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Production began on 4 March 2000 with two plasma cutting systems and seven large presses; the Dutch company Centralstaal had invested 25 million euros in building up Ostseestaal GmbH. In its founding year 2000, revenue was 3.1 million euros. In 2005 it bought a former production hall of the neighbouring Volkswerft Stralsund, and the Stralsund firm AIU built an industrial hall measuring 99 × 155 metres with 17 crane systems for different load classes. Having started as a supplier to the maritime industry, work for "classic shipbuilding" accounted for only around 25 percent by 2010; new business fields are architecture, alternative energies and megayachts. Together with Stralsund University of Applied Sciences and the University of Rostock, the company is developing a process for multi-dimensional forming of steel elements at higher temperatures in a project with a volume of 5.6 million euros. From 2013 this was intended to produce steel rotor blades for wind turbines in a globally novel forming process in the semi-warm to warm temperature range, which in the company's view could replace the plastic rotor blades used until then. To produce formed parts for the aircraft industry, the independent company Modul- und Formbau (MFB) Stralsund was founded. It uses a production hall of the former Luftfahrzeug-Gesellschaft (LFG) Werft Stralsund. Further production of components lay with the subsidiary Formstaal GmbH & Co. KG until the end of 2017; since 2018 it has also operated under the name Ostseestaal GmbH & Co. KG. The newly structured operation now has around 150 employees. In 2019 the subsidiary Ostsee Tank Solutions GmbH was founded for the production of roofs for large tanks. Among other things, the company formed the steel sheets for the outer facade of the Ozeaneum Stralsund, for the research vessel Maria S. Merian and elements for the Sidra Tree of the Qatar National Convention Centre. In 2010, components were formed and supplied for 60 percent of megayachts. Steel was also supplied for the Porsche Pavilion in Wolfsburg. The firm also supplies the aviation industry, including parts for the Eurofighter and the Airbus A350. For the Infoversum in Groningen, the building segments made of Corten were delivered in 2013. An in-house development is a fully solar-powered water bus named Solaaris, which has been operating on the Aasee in Münster since 2012. For the Weiße Flotte shipping company, solar-powered ferry boats were built together with Formstaal, which the company uses on ferry lines of the Berlin public transport operator (see FährBär).

Together with Stralsund University of Applied Sciences and the University of Rostock, the company worked on a project with a volume of 5.6 million euros to develop a process for multi-dimensional forming of steel elements at higher temperatures. From 2013, this was intended to enable production of steel rotor blades for wind turbines in a globally novel semi-warm to warm forming process, potentially replacing plastic rotor blades. To produce formed parts for the aircraft industry, the independent company Modul- und Formbau (MFB) Stralsund was founded, using a production hall of the former Luftfahrzeug-Gesellschaft (LFG) Werft Stralsund. Further production of components lay with the subsidiary Formstaal GmbH & Co. KG until the end of 2017; since 2018 it has also operated under the name Ostseestaal GmbH & Co. KG.
