Overview

Pandora is an American music streaming and internet radio service headquartered in Oakland, California. It is owned by SiriusXM, the broadcasting corporation, which acquired it in February 2019 for $3.5 billion in stock. Pandora is best known for its personalized radio stations built on the Music Genome Project, a system that classifies songs by musical traits such as genre, instrumentation, and harmony. The service offers both an ad-supported free tier and subscription tiers, including Pandora Plus and Pandora Premium, the latter providing on-demand listening. Founded in 2000 as Savage Beast Technologies by Will Glaser, Jon Kraft, and Tim Westergren, the company initially operated as a business-to-business recommendation engine, licensing its technology to retailers such as Best Buy and AOL Music. After facing financial difficulties, it pivoted to the consumer market and launched Pandora as an internet radio service in 2005. The service grew rapidly, becoming a dominant player in internet radio in the United States. Pandora went public in 2011 on the New York Stock Exchange and expanded its offerings through acquisitions and new features, including on-demand streaming and podcast content. As of 2023, Pandora had approximately 46 million active users, down from a peak of over 80 million in the mid-2010s. The service operates primarily in the United States, having discontinued service in Australia and New Zealand in 2017. Under SiriusXM ownership, Pandora continues to be a key asset in the streaming music landscape, though it faces intense competition from Spotify, Apple Music, and other platforms.

History

Pandora was founded in 2000 as Savage Beast Technologies by Will Glaser, Jon Kraft, and Tim Westergren. Glaser conceived the Music Genome Project, a system for classifying music by traits and attributes. The company was initially pitched as an e-commerce service using the recommendation engine, but after the dot-com bubble burst, it pivoted to licensing the technology to retailers such as AOL Music and Best Buy. By 2001, the company had run through its initial $2 million in funding and faced increasing debt. The founders convinced 50 employees to work without pay for two years, which led to a lawsuit by former employees in 2003 over deferred salaries; the suit was settled and a few employees were laid off. In 2004, Walden Venture Capital led an $8 million funding round, and Joe Kennedy, formerly of Saturn, was hired as CEO. After agreements with Best Buy and Borders lapsed, the company shifted focus to the consumer market, developing Pandora as an internet radio service using the Music Genome Project for personalization. Pandora officially launched in August 2005 after a beta period. It initially was subscription-based but added a free, ad-supported version in November 2005 after Westergren noticed users were abusing the free trial. Advertising could be targeted based on the current song. In 2011, Pandora went public on the New York Stock Exchange, with 800,000 tracks from 80,000 artists and 80 million users. By 2013, Pandora had 200 million users, including 70 million monthly active users, and accounted for 70% of all internet radio listening in the United States. In September 2013, Pandora removed the 40-hour-per-month limitation for free mobile listening. By November 2014, the library had grown to over 1.5 million songs. In September 2016, Pandora launched Pandora Plus, a $4.99 subscription service. In 2017, Pandora revealed that 56 million of its 81 million active users subscribed to the Today's Country station, and country music accounted for over 1.7 billion listening hours in 2016. On July 31, 2017, Pandora discontinued services in Australia and New Zealand to focus on the U.S. market. In September 2017, Roger Lynch became CEO and emphasized podcasts. In February 2019, SiriusXM acquired Pandora for $3.5 billion in stock, and Lynch departed, replaced by SiriusXM CEO Jim Meyer. In October 2019, SiriusXM signed a multiyear deal with Marvel to launch superhero-based podcasts in 2020. Pandora had about 55.9 million active monthly users and 6.4 million subscribers in 2021, and by 2023, 46 million users.
