History
Paradis Films was founded in 1983 by Éric Heumann, Jean Labadie, and Stéphane Sorlat. From its early years, the company established itself as a producer of ambitious auteur cinema. In 1988, it produced Theo Angelopoulos's Landscape in the Mist, which won the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival. The 1990s brought further acclaim: Indochine (1991) by Régis Wargnier won the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film in 1993 and the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film. In 1995, Ulysses' Gaze by Theo Angelopoulos won the FIPRESCI Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, and in 1998, Eternity and a Day, also by Angelopoulos, won the Palme d'Or at Cannes. The company continued to produce and co-produce films by major international directors, including Wong Kar-wai's In the Mood for Love (2000), which won the César for Best Foreign Film in 2001, and 2046 (2004). Other notable productions include Mira Nair's Monsoon Wedding (2001), which won the Golden Lion at Venice and was nominated for a Golden Globe, and Daniel Burman's The Son of Elias (2004), which won the Grand Jury Prize at the Berlinale. In 2010, Bertrand Tavernier's The Princess of Montpensier competed at Cannes, and in 2011, Tomas Alfredson's Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (La Taupe) was in competition at Venice and won two BAFTA Awards in 2012. In 2014, Paradis Films began producing television films, notably the Crime à... collection, which has aired on French television. As a distributor, the company has released European art films, French comedies, and animated features. In recent years, Paradis Films has continued to produce and distribute, with upcoming releases such as Les Héros du Louvre (2026) and Anna et les enfants (2026).
