Overview

Parbode is a Surinamese opinion monthly magazine founded in 2006 by Jaap Hoogendam. It publishes reportages, interviews, articles and columns that present diverse opinions and viewpoints, and it is known for discussing sensitive topics openly. Its circulation is around 5,000 copies, and it is sold in Suriname, the Netherlands and the Netherlands Antilles. The editorial office is located in the centre of Paramaribo. The editor-in-chief is Julian Neijhorst, and there are about six permanent staff members; the editorial team also works extensively with freelancers. The editorial board operates independently of politics, religion, advertisers and the publisher, as laid down in its editorial statute. Parbode is published by the Caribbean Media Group of publisher Jaap Hoogendam. Jaap Hoogendam died on 13 January 2020. He had known for some time that he did not have long to live and made preparations to place Parbode in a foundation to safeguard its continued existence. The magazine's website, parbode.com, offers free newsletters, digital reading, subscriptions and advertising information, and covers sections such as Background, Reportage, Column & Essay, Interview, Research, Opinion & Analysis, Sranan Sani, Books, Culture, Memre Stonfutu and Parbode Xtra. Recent online articles have addressed topics including traditional savings (Kasmoni), a film review of Werehpai, Javanese Surinamese identity, notable Surinamese individuals, fuel subsidies, river pollution and suicide rates. Parbode positions itself as an independent, in-depth and culturally engaged publication for Surinamese and diaspora readers.

History

Parbode was founded in 2006 by Jaap Hoogendam as a Surinamese opinion monthly magazine. From its inception, it aimed to provide a platform for reportages, interviews, articles and columns that present different opinions and viewpoints, and to make sensitive subjects discussable. The magazine established an editorial statute guaranteeing independence from political, religious, advertising and publishing interests. Its circulation settled at around 5,000 copies, distributed in Suriname, the Netherlands and the Netherlands Antilles. The editorial office is in the centre of Paramaribo, with a small permanent staff of about six and a network of freelancers. Jaap Hoogendam, who was also the publisher through his Caribbean Media Group, died on 13 January 2020. Aware that his time was limited, he had prepared for Parbode to be placed in a foundation to secure its future. The magazine continues to publish under the editorship of Julian Neijhorst, maintaining its independent editorial line and expanding its digital presence through parbode.com, newsletters and the Parbode Xtra section.
