Overview

Passugger is a mineral water brand operated by Allegra Passugger Mineralquellen AG in 7062 Passugg, Switzerland. The brand states it has been setting signs since 1896 and describes itself as the independent mineral water of Graubünden and the oldest mineral water in Switzerland. Its product range includes Quellen Mineralwasser, Crystal Edition and Private Label offerings.

History

The official history page records that in 1562 Johannes Antistes Fabricius provided the first written reference to the "Arasker Wässerlin" and linked consumption of "Arasger Sauerwasser" to the prevention of goiter, which was later understood to be due to its high iodine content. In 1863 the springs, which had fallen into oblivion, were rediscovered by Ulrich Sprecher, a saddler and upholsterer from Chur, while gold panning in the Rabiosa gorge. In 1874 Theophil von Sprecher acquired the springs from the municipality of Malix and bought a pension property, laying the foundation for commercial use. In 1883 a Zurich consortium bought the springs together with the infrastructure built in the meantime. In 1896 the Passugger Heilquellen AG was founded in Zurich with 20 shareholders subscribing share capital of 300,000 francs, and a hotel with spa operations, hiking trails and a drinking hall in the Rabiosa gorge were built. In 1900 Passugger was awarded a silver medal at the World Exhibition in Paris. Up to the First World War, spa operations with guests "from all over the world" continued.
