Overview

Paytm is an Indian financial-technology brand operated by One97 Communications Limited and headquartered in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Founded in 2010 by Vijay Shekhar Sharma, it began as a prepaid mobile-recharge and direct-to-home television-recharge service before expanding into a broad consumer and merchant payments ecosystem. The brand became closely associated with the growth of mobile wallets and QR-code payments in India, particularly after the 2016 demonetisation period accelerated the adoption of digital transactions. Its consumer services have included the Paytm Wallet, bill payments, mobile and utility recharges, peer-to-peer transfers, UPI payments, ticketing, digital gold, investment products, insurance distribution, credit and buy-now-pay-later services, and online gaming. For merchants, Paytm has provided QR acceptance, payment gateways, Android-based point-of-sale terminals, merchant settlement tools, and Soundbox devices that provide spoken confirmation of received payments. The company has also offered financial products through partnerships with banks and other regulated institutions rather than acting as a universal bank itself. Paytm’s expansion was supported by major investments from Sapphire Ventures, Alibaba Group, Ant Financial, SoftBank, Berkshire Hathaway and other investors. One97 Communications completed an initial public offering in November 2021. The issue raised approximately ₹18,300 crore and was one of India’s largest IPOs at that time, although the shares opened below the offer’s upper price band and declined sharply on the first trading day. The company has pursued adjacent businesses through acquisitions and investments. These have included online ticketing, local commerce, consumer-technology and lending assets. In 2024, it agreed to sell its entertainment-ticketing operations, including Paytm Insider and TicketNew, to Zomato. Paytm’s international initiatives have included PayPay, a Japan-based QR-payments joint venture established with SoftBank and Yahoo Japan, and Paytm Labs, a Toronto-based research and technology operation. Regulatory scrutiny has been a major turning point. The Reserve Bank of India restricted Paytm Payments Bank from onboarding new customers in 2022 and in January 2024 directed it to cease most banking and deposit-related activities after identifying compliance and supervisory concerns. The restrictions materially affected the relationship between the Paytm brand and its payments-bank subsidiary, while the wider Paytm payments and financial-services business continued through other regulated arrangements. Paytm therefore remains an active fintech brand, but its operating model has been reshaped by regulation, a greater emphasis on merchant payments and distribution, and the disposal of non-core businesses.

History

Paytm was established in August 2010 by Vijay Shekhar Sharma under One97 Communications. Its initial business focused on prepaid mobile and direct-to-home television recharges, a relatively narrow service that gave the company an entry point into India’s rapidly expanding mobile-internet economy. It added postpaid mobile and landline bill payments in 2013, then introduced the Paytm Wallet in early 2014. The wallet was subsequently accepted by services including Indian Railways and Uber, helping the brand move from recharge utility to general-purpose digital payment method. During 2015 and 2016, Paytm broadened its consumer proposition with education fees, electricity, gas and water payments, travel reservations, bus and rail ticketing, film and event bookings, and Paytm QR. Alibaba Group and Ant Financial became important shareholders, while other funding came from investors including Sapphire Ventures, MediaTek’s investment arm, Ratan Tata and SoftBank. The company also launched Paytm Gold, Paytm Payments Bank, a messaging product with in-chat payments, and merchant acceptance tools. The 2016 demonetisation of high-value Indian currency notes created a major increase in public attention toward electronic payments and strengthened Paytm’s visibility among consumers and small merchants. From 2017 through 2019, Paytm developed a wider financial-services and commerce portfolio. SoftBank invested approximately $1.4 billion in 2017, and Berkshire Hathaway invested in 2018. Paytm Money began operating as an investment and wealth-management service, while Paytm for Business gave merchants tools to accept digital payments and settle funds into bank accounts. The company expanded into digital lending, insurance distribution, credit cards, loyalty subscriptions, gaming and ticketing. Acquisitions included Plustxt, Shifu, Near.in, Little, nearbuy.com, Cube26, Insider.in, TicketNew and NightStay. In 2019, Paytm introduced Paytm First, rebranded its gaming business as Paytm First Games, and launched a Soundbox device that gave merchants audible confirmation of successful payments. The company continued expanding during the pandemic period. It supported digital collections and payments, facilitated donations to the PM CARES Fund, and announced initiatives involving oxygen concentrators. It also developed international capabilities. Paytm Labs was established in Toronto as a research and development operation, while PayPay, a QR-payments joint venture involving SoftBank and Yahoo Japan, launched in Japan in 2018. One97 Communications filed for an Indian IPO in 2021 and listed on 18 November of that year. The offering raised approximately ₹18,300 crore and was widely described as one of India’s largest IPOs at the time. Its weak first-day trading performance highlighted investor concerns about profitability, competitive intensity and the difficulty of valuing a high-growth fintech business. Paytm subsequently continued to develop merchant hardware, payment infrastructure, financial-product distribution and risk-management technology. Regulation became the defining challenge of the 2020s. In 2022, the Reserve Bank of India prohibited Paytm Payments Bank from onboarding new customers following an inspection. In January 2024, the regulator ordered the subsidiary to stop most deposit-taking, credit and other banking activities after identifying serious compliance and supervisory deficiencies. The action did not formally eliminate the Paytm brand’s entire payments business, but it required the company to separate or redirect services involving other regulated banking partners. In the same year, Paytm agreed to sell its entertainment-ticketing operations to Zomato, reducing the scope of its consumer-commerce portfolio and concentrating the business more heavily on payments, merchant services and financial distribution.

  • Prepaid digital wallet · 2014

    Paytm Wallet

Paytm Wallet was introduced in 2014 as a stored-value digital payment instrument for online purchases, recharges, transport and merchant transactions. It helped Paytm move beyond mobile recharge and became one of the brand’s most important early growth products. Its role was affected by the 2024 regulatory restrictions involving Paytm Payments Bank and related payment instruments.

    Paytm Payment Gateway

Paytm Payment Gateway provides online businesses with tools to accept digital payments through web and mobile checkout experiences. It supports merchant integration, payment processing and customized checkout functionality. Paytm Postpaid

Paytm Postpaid is a digitally distributed deferred-payment product offered through regulated financial partners. It forms part of Paytm’s broader strategy of using transaction data, merchant relationships and application distribution to provide or facilitate access to consumer credit.

  • Payments banking · 2017

    Paytm Payments Bank

Paytm Payments Bank was a separately regulated payments-bank entity associated with the Paytm ecosystem. It offered banking and payment-related services but was subject to major Reserve Bank of India restrictions in 2024 following supervisory and compliance concerns. The bank’s role in the Paytm ecosystem was subsequently reduced as payment processing moved toward partner banks.
