Peter Affenzeller

Peter Affenzeller is an Austrian spirits distillery based in Alberndorf in der Riedmark in the Mühlviertel region of Upper Austria. The company was founded by Peter Affenzeller, who was born in Linz in 1986 and grew up in Alberndorf. After training as an electronics technician and working at Siemens AG, he turned to spirits production. The distillery traces its roots to a historic grain distilling right attached to the family home. In 2009 the first whisky was distilled and won an award, prompting the professional establishment of the Peter Affenzeller brand. The distillery produces single malt whisky, gin, vodka and rum, using raw materials from its own or regional cultivation, water from its own spring, and barrels made from Mühlviertel wood. The core whisky range includes a single malt with an 8-year maturation at 40% ABV, made from 100% own barley malt and fresh Mühlviertel spring water. In 2014 the White Swan line was introduced for gin and vodka, and since 2020 the RuMonkey brand has offered rum made from Caribbean sugar cane. The company produces around 25,000 liters of alcohol per year. Peter Affenzeller is also a tourist destination, attracting more than 25,000 visitors annually. It operates a café lounge, a multimedia show and barrel storage called the "Whiskysafe" opened in 2020, and a whisky hiking trail around the distillery. The distillery is regarded as the first whisky distillery worldwide to produce CO2-neutrally. Its products have won numerous awards, including gold medals at Destillata and the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC), and it was named Whisky of the Year in two categories at Destillata. The brand also offers whisky chocolate and whisky marmalade as by-products, and invites customers to invest in casks through its "Whiskyinvest" program.

With more than 25,000 visitors annually, the distillery is a tourist attraction in the Mühlviertel region and Upper Austria. There is a café lounge and the "Whiskysafe", a multimedia show and barrel storage facility opened in 2020. A whisky hiking trail was created around the distillery. The product range includes five whisky varieties, two gin varieties, vodka, and by-products such as whisky chocolate and whisky marmalade. The company produces around 25,000 liters of alcohol per year. In 2013 and 2014, Peter Affenzeller's products won their first gold medals. The whiskies have repeatedly won first place and other awards at international competitions. Most recently, they were awarded seven gold medals at Destillata and named Whisky of the Year in two categories. Six more medals were won at the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC). Further awards include second prize at the Upper Austrian Craft Prize 2017 and the Regionality Prize for "Young Ideas" 2013.
