Overview
Phantom Limb is an independent record label based in Brighton, England. James Vella founded the label in June 2017 after developing a career across independent music, artist development, A&R, distribution, publishing, and performance. Its catalogue is centered on experimental, ambient, electronic, and exploratory music, while extending into hip-hop, experimental metal, indie, folk, dance, soundtrack work, and other forms that do not fit neatly within conventional genre categories. The label was established as a broader music organisation rather than solely as a vehicle for releasing records. Its activities include recorded-music production and distribution, music publishing, label services, and live representation. Phantom Limb Publishing operates in partnership with Wise Music Group, while its label-services division, Five Worlds, provides support for artists and projects beyond the core Phantom Limb catalogue. The organisation also operates a live-agency arm, Phantom Limb Touring, which has programmed tours and events for label-affiliated artists as well as for outside acts. Vella brought substantial prior experience to the project. He founded O Rosa Records in 2006, worked as a consultant for Injazero Records in 2016, and held A&R and international-distribution responsibilities at FatCat Records from 2008 to 2016. He is also a musician, having co-founded yndi halda and released solo work under the name A Lily. At Phantom Limb, Vella works with music-industry professionals including publicist Ken Li and George Clift, who has been associated with the Hot Salvation record store, label, and distribution operation. The label's catalogue includes work by Kevin Richard Martin, Loraine James, Richard Skelton, WaqWaq Kingdom, Dylan Henner, A Lily, Suso Saíz, Norman McLaren, KMRU, Iggor Cavalera, Machinefabriek, Senyawa, MC Yallah, and 食品まつり a.k.a foodman, among others. Releases have appeared in vinyl, CD, cassette, and digital-download formats. Several records have received strong critical recognition, including selections named record of the day, month, or year by outlets such as Bandcamp Daily, The Guardian, and Loud & Quiet. Phantom Limb also organises its catalogue through specialist series. Spirituals is a digital-only imprint for ambient and experimental music from different parts of the world. Sun Language is dedicated to reissues of historically earlier recordings, including material by Miguel Noya, K. Yoshimatsu, Ellen Zweig, and Xochimoki. Geist im Kino focuses on music for film, television, dance, theatre, and ballet, and includes Imaginal Soundtracking, a strand devoted to new scores or rescores for older moving-image works. The label's projects frequently connect recorded music with other art forms. Loraine James's Building Something Beautiful For Me responded artistically to the work of New York composer Julius Eastman and was performed with the London Contemporary Orchestra at London's Southbank Centre. Kevin Richard Martin's Phantom Limb projects have included a rescore to Andrei Tarkovsky's Soviet film Solaris and a collaboration with Kenyan musician KMRU. In late 2024, Phantom Limb released compositions by Canadian animator Norman McLaren, making that material publicly available for the first time. Phantom Limb marked its fifth anniversary through a substantial programme of media coverage in 2022 and through concerts curated in London and Amsterdam in 2023. The organisation remains an active independent music platform whose identity combines adventurous curation, archival reissue work, artist services, publishing, and live programming.
History
Phantom Limb was founded in Brighton in June 2017 by James Vella. The label grew out of Vella's earlier work in independent music: he had established O Rosa Records in 2006, consulted for Injazero Records in 2016, and worked in A&R and international distribution at FatCat Records between 2008 and 2016. His experience as a musician, including co-founding yndi halda and releasing solo records as A Lily, also informed the label's artist-centered approach. At its formation, Vella invited Ken Li and George Clift to participate. Li had previously worked with Thrill Jockey, while Clift was associated with the Hot Salvation record store, label, and distribution operation. Phantom Limb was conceived as more than a conventional label. Alongside releases, it developed touring, publishing, and service functions. Phantom Limb Touring handled live representation and event programming, and Phantom Limb Publishing was established in partnership with Wise Music Group. In 2022, former Mute Records A&R director Dean Wengrow joined the organisation to operate Five Worlds, its label-services division. The recorded catalogue has remained deliberately broad. Experimental, ambient, and electronic music form the core, but Phantom Limb has also issued hip-hop, experimental metal, indie, folk, dance, and soundtrack-related work. Its artists and collaborators have included Kevin Richard Martin, Loraine James, Richard Skelton, WaqWaq Kingdom, Dylan Henner, Suso Saíz, KMRU, Iggor Cavalera, Machinefabriek, Senyawa, MC Yallah, foodman, A Lily, and others. Physical releases have appeared on vinyl, CD, and cassette, alongside digital editions. The label's records have periodically received record-of-the-day, month, or year recognition from publications including Bandcamp Daily, The Guardian, and Loud & Quiet. Phantom Limb developed several series to give distinct purposes to different parts of its catalogue. Spirituals is a digital-only imprint concentrating on ambient and experimental artists from around the world. Sun Language is an archival reissue series, bringing older and sometimes difficult-to-access recordings back into circulation. Its subjects have included Venezuelan electronic musician Miguel Noya, Japanese home-recording artist K. Yoshimatsu, experimental poet Ellen Zweig, and the Aztec New Age duo Xochimoki. Geist im Kino is dedicated to music associated with film and other visual or performing arts, including television, dance, theatre, and ballet. Its Imaginal Soundtracking strand focuses on new scores for older films and moving-image works. A notable strand of the label's work is the connection between contemporary composition, archival material, and live presentation. Loraine James's Building Something Beautiful For Me was conceived as an artistic response to the music of Julius Eastman and was performed with the London Contemporary Orchestra at London's Southbank Centre. Kevin Richard Martin's Phantom Limb projects have included a rescore of Andrei Tarkovsky's Solaris and a collaboration with Kenyan musician KMRU. In late 2024, Phantom Limb issued compositions by Canadian animator Norman McLaren, making them publicly available for the first time. The organisation's fifth anniversary occurred in 2022 and generated coverage from a range of specialist music and cultural platforms. A broader celebratory concert programme followed in 2023, with events in London and Amsterdam and the Dutch premiere of the Loraine James project. Through its combination of adventurous curation, specialist series, artist services, publishing, touring, and physical and digital distribution, Phantom Limb has developed into a multifaceted independent music company rather than a single-format record imprint.
