Overview

Philips, formally Koninklijke Philips N.V., is a Dutch multinational health-technology company headquartered in Amsterdam. It began in Eindhoven in 1891, when Gerard Philips and his father Frederik established Philips & Co. to manufacture incandescent electric lamps. Gerard’s brother Anton joined the business in 1895 and helped build the commercial organization that enabled Philips to expand beyond the Netherlands. During the twentieth century, the company became one of Europe’s largest electronics conglomerates, with activities spanning lighting, radios, televisions, audio equipment, domestic appliances, personal-care products, electronic components and medical technology. Research has been central to Philips’s development. The company opened its physics laboratory, later known as NatLab, in 1914. Research conducted there supported advances in lighting, radio, X-ray equipment, semiconductor technology, recording formats and other fields. Philips introduced the Philishave rotary electric shaver in 1939, developed radio and television products, and became a major supplier of consumer electronics after the Second World War. Its Compact Cassette, introduced in 1963, achieved broad international adoption. Philips later worked with Sony on the Compact Disc standard, helping establish optical disc technology as a major consumer format. The company also played an important role in semiconductors and industrial technology. Philips acquired or developed businesses in components, integrated circuits and manufacturing equipment. Its 1984 joint venture with ASM International became ASML, now a separate semiconductor-equipment company. Philips was also among the founding investors in Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company. These activities illustrate the company’s historic role as both a consumer brand and a technology research organization. From the 1990s onward, Philips undertook substantial restructuring. It reduced exposure to computing and other businesses, sold or separated semiconductor operations, and transferred its television activities to TP Vision in 2012. Its lighting business was separated in 2016 and later renamed Signify, although Philips-branded lighting products continued under licence. In 2021, Philips completed the sale of its Domestic Appliances business; that independent business adopted the name Versuni in 2023 and retained rights to use the Philips brand under licence. Philips is now principally positioned as a health-technology company. Its reported activities are organized around Diagnosis & Treatment, Connected Care and Personal Health. Diagnosis & Treatment includes image-guided therapy and precision-diagnosis systems such as MRI, CT and ultrasound technologies. Connected Care includes patient monitoring, hospital informatics, sleep and respiratory care, and businesses associated with Respironics. Personal Health includes electric shavers, Sonicare oral-care products, Avent mother-and-child-care products and related personal-care solutions. The Philips name therefore remains visible to consumers while the company’s corporate strategy is primarily directed toward professional healthcare, connected systems and personal health.

History

Philips & Co. was founded in Eindhoven in 1891 by Gerard Philips and his father Frederik to manufacture incandescent lamps. Anton Philips joined in 1895 and contributed to the company’s commercial expansion. The business was incorporated as N.V. Philips’ Gloeilampenfabrieken in 1912 and established a dedicated research laboratory in 1914. Queen Wilhelmina granted Philips the Dutch royal designation in 1916; the word Koninklijke became part of the formal corporate name much later. During the interwar period, Philips diversified into radio and broadcasting technology. Its laboratories experimented with shortwave transmission, while the company expanded its manufacturing and distribution network. Philips also participated in the Phoebus cartel, an agreement among major lamp producers that influenced the development and marketing of incandescent bulbs. In the 1930s, the company broadened its consumer portfolio and introduced the Philishave rotary electric shaver in 1939. The Second World War disrupted Philips’s operations. Several senior executives left the Netherlands after the German invasion, while Frits Philips remained in Eindhoven. A 1942 Allied bombing raid damaged Philips industrial facilities and caused extensive destruction and civilian casualties in the surrounding city. During the occupation, a Philips-related workshop at Vught concentration camp used Jewish prisoners for production. Frits Philips attempted to protect workers, and Yad Vashem later recognized him as one of the Righteous Among the Nations. After the war, Philips rebuilt and became a major European producer of televisions, radios, audio equipment, lighting and domestic products. It introduced the Compact Cassette recorder in 1963, creating a recording format that became an international standard. Philips also developed early domestic videocassette equipment and continued research into semiconductor devices, medical systems and unconventional power technologies such as the Stirling engine. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, cooperation with Sony produced the Compact Disc format, one of the most influential consumer-technology standards of the period. Philips expanded through acquisitions and joint ventures while also experiencing significant pressure from global competition. In 1974 it acquired Magnavox, and in 1975 it acquired Signetics. In 1984, Philips and ASM International established the venture that became ASML. Philips was also a founding investor in TSMC in 1987. Losses in the late 1980s led to a major restructuring under Jan Timmer, including large-scale job reductions and the disposal of non-core operations. Philips sold or transferred much of its computer-systems activity and separated its semiconductor business in 2006; the resulting company became NXP Semiconductors. The company’s legal identity changed several times: Philips Electronics N.V. in 1994, Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V. in 1998 and Koninklijke Philips N.V. in 2013. In 1997, the board decided to move the corporate headquarters from Eindhoven to Amsterdam, with relocation beginning the following year. Philips also sold its controlling interest in PolyGram to Seagram in 1998, ending a major chapter in its entertainment-business history. In the 2010s, Philips increasingly focused on health technology. Its television activities moved to TP Vision in 2012, lighting was separated in 2016 and later renamed Signify, and the Domestic Appliances business was sold in 2021. The remaining Philips organization combines professional healthcare technology with consumer-facing personal health. Its three principal areas are Diagnosis & Treatment, Connected Care and Personal Health. The company has continued to expand through acquisitions in medical imaging, patient monitoring, healthcare information systems, cardiac diagnostics and minimally invasive treatment. Roy Jakobs became chief executive in 2022, while the organization has also pursued cost reductions and remediation related to the Respironics recall.
