History

Philology Jazz Records was founded in July 1987 by Piangiarelli, who named the label after his jazz heroes Phil Woods, Chet Baker and Lee Konitz. The label's motto, "La Vera Natura del Jazz" (The True Nature of Jazz), reflects its dedication to authentic jazz expression. After more than 30 years of involvement with jazz, the founder had a turning point, asking himself not what jazz could give him but what he could do for jazz. Recognizing the high level of Italian jazz, he decided to organize studio and live recordings for the label featuring Italian and American musicians, creating unusual encounters. He also sought to rediscover badly forgotten musicians, such as Tony Scott, who returned to the studio for Philology for a series of albums including "The Clarinet Album" (PHIL W 112), "Dialogue with Myself" (PHIL.W 76), "Body and Soul (Homage to Billie Holiday)" (PHIL. W 119), "Homage to Lady Day" (PHIL.109) and "Poets of Jazz" (PHIL.W 90). On these albums, Tony Scott encountered Italian jazzmen such as Faraò, D'Andrea and Sellani. Similarly, Lee Konitz and Phil Woods were paired with some of the best Italian musicians on albums of original and rare beauty, including Lee Konitz's "Blew" (PHIL. W 26) with Enrico Pieranunzi's Space Jazz Trio, "Solitudes" (PHIL.W 28) duets with Pieranunzi, "12 Gershwin in 12 Keys" (PHIL.312) with Franco D'Andrea, "Inside Cole Porter" (PHIL. 107) with Franco D'Andrea, "Breaths and Whispers - The Skryabin Project" (PHIL. W 75), "Selfportrait – Dialogue with Myself (in 4 lines)" (PHIL. W 121), "Speakin' Lowly" (PHIL. W 71) with Renato Sellani, and "L'Age Mur" (PHIL. W 123) with Enrico Rava. Phil Woods' "Phil's Mood" (PHIL. W 27) was recorded with E. Pieranunzi's trio. The label has released albums by Italian artists such as Norberto Tamburrino ("Reflection(s) On Monk", W 436.2 – 2009) and Rosanna Fedele ("What is it For", 2010), as well as the project "Memorie di Standards" by Liberto/Cossu/Russo and Eugenia Munari (2011). In 2010, Philology produced the benefit project "Jazzfriends for Emergency", which was presented on Rai International's "Notturno Italiano" program. The project offered a CD in exchange for a minimum donation of 10 euros to support Emergency. Philology discs are distributed by IRD and are available in the best stores, as well as directly by mail order at a base price of 13 euros, with discounts for orders over 10 pieces. The label is based in Macerata, Italy, at via Panfilo 51 A. It maintains a WordPress website with sections for news, the label's story, studio catalogue and live catalogue. The label remains active, with new releases announced as recently as September 2011.
