Overview

Philosophiques is a semiannual academic journal of philosophy founded in 1974 by Yvon Lafrance of the University of Ottawa. Since 1 January 1976 it has been the official organ of the Société de philosophie du Québec (SPQ). The journal publishes scientific articles covering the various domains of philosophy and the history of philosophy, selected solely on the basis of their quality. It promotes no school, doctrine, or methodology, and its sole concern is to contribute to stimulating philosophical research. It also publishes, by invitation, critical studies and reviews of recently published philosophical works. The journal is published in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and is available through Érudit, Mir@bel, and PhilPapers. Its editorial content is bilingual, reflecting the linguistic duality of the Canadian philosophical community. Over its five decades of publication, Philosophiques has become a key venue for francophone and bilingual philosophical scholarship in Canada and internationally.

History

Philosophiques was founded in 1974 by Yvon Lafrance, a professor at the University of Ottawa. The journal was established to provide a dedicated venue for philosophical research in Quebec and francophone Canada. On 1 January 1976, it became the official organ of the Société de philosophie du Québec (SPQ), a role it has maintained since. The journal publishes articles in all areas of philosophy and the history of philosophy, selected exclusively on the basis of their quality, without promoting any particular school, doctrine, or methodology. In addition to regular articles, it publishes invited critical studies and book reviews of recently released philosophical works. The journal is published semiannually and is based in Montreal, Quebec. It is available through the Érudit platform, Mir@bel, and PhilPapers. A historical overview of the journal was published in 2024 by Alexis Lafleur-Paiement and Mitia Rioux-Beaulne in Philosophiques, vol. 51-1, spring 2024, pages 3-16, marking five decades of continuous publication.
