Overview
Pictet Group is a Swiss multinational financial services group headquartered in Geneva and historically organised as a partnership rather than a publicly traded corporation. Established in 1805 as Banque De Candolle Mallet & Cie, it developed from a Geneva merchant bank into a specialist institution serving private clients, families, pension funds, investment institutions and asset managers. The Pictet name entered the firm in the nineteenth century when Edouard Pictet joined the partnership, and the business adopted the name Pictet & Cie in 1926. The group’s principal activities are wealth management, asset management and asset servicing. Pictet Wealth Management provides private banking, investment advice, portfolio management, family-office services and access to public and private markets. Pictet Asset Management serves institutional and wholesale investors through active, quantitative, multi-asset, fixed-income, equity, alternative and thematic strategies. Pictet Asset Services provides fund administration, custody, governance, trading and related infrastructure for asset managers, pension funds, banks and other institutional clients. The group does not present itself as a conventional investment bank and does not focus on commercial lending. Pictet expanded internationally after the Second World War. It entered institutional asset management in the late 1960s and opened its first office in the current international network in Montreal in 1974. It subsequently developed offices and regulated banking operations in major financial centres, including Geneva, Frankfurt, Nassau, Hong Kong and Singapore. Reference material describes a network of more than 30 offices and a workforce exceeding 5,500 people, including investment professionals and private bankers. In 2014, after more than two centuries as a simple partnership, Pictet changed its legal structure to a corporate partnership serving as a holding structure for its international businesses. The change allowed the group to publish annual results and operate more readily across jurisdictions while retaining its distinctive succession model. Ownership and management remain concentrated among managing partners. Under the group’s stated partnership tradition, partner status is temporary and is transferred in stages rather than passed automatically to descendants, supporting continuity across generations. Pictet positions itself around long-term stewardship, independence, investment expertise and client confidentiality, while also presenting sustainability and responsible investment as important parts of its asset-management offering. The group launched the Prix Pictet photography award in 2008 to draw attention to environmental and social issues. Its history has nevertheless included significant regulatory and legal scrutiny. In 2023, Pictet entered a deferred prosecution agreement with the United States Department of Justice concerning assistance allegedly provided to US taxpayers seeking to conceal assets and income through offshore accounts during 2008–2014. The settlement included a payment of approximately US$122.9 million. Pictet remains a privately held, internationally active financial group rather than a listed bank.
History
Pictet traces its origin to Geneva on 23 July 1805, when Jacob-Michel-François de Candolle and Jacques-Henry Mallet established Banque De Candolle Mallet & Cie with limited partners. Like other Geneva banks of the period, the firm initially traded goods, but it soon concentrated on financial assistance, commercial advice and the management of clients’ wealth. By the 1830s it was holding diversified securities for clients, an early indication of the investment-management orientation that later became central to the group. Edouard Pictet, a nephew of de Candolle’s wife, joined the partnership in 1841. His arrival introduced the Pictet name, which remained associated with the institution thereafter. The bank expanded substantially between 1890 and 1929, increasing its staff from 12 to more than 80. In 1926 it formally adopted the name Pictet & Cie. The Great Depression and the Second World War brought a period of slower development, but the bank resumed expansion during the post-war economic growth of the 1950s. A major strategic turning point came in the late 1960s, when Pictet entered institutional asset management. That business later became one of the group’s largest activities, alongside private wealth management. In 1974 the bank opened an office in Montreal, the first location in the international network that it subsequently built in major financial centres. Its workforce grew from roughly 70 people in 1950 to about 300 in 1980. By the early twenty-first century Pictet had become one of Switzerland’s largest privately held wealth managers and an important European investment-management business. The group’s modern structure was established in 2014. After 209 years as a simple partnership, Pictet became a société en commandite par actions, or corporate partnership, used as the holding structure for its international operations. This enabled the publication of annual results and provided a legal framework suited to cross-border operations without converting the group into a publicly listed company. The partnership model continued to place control with managing partners. Partner status is not automatically inherited by children; instead, ownership is transferred in stages as partners retire, helping maintain continuity among several generations of leadership. Pictet now operates through three principal business areas: wealth management for private clients and families, asset management for institutional and wholesale investors, and asset services for funds, banks, pension funds and other professional investors. Specialist units also address alternative investments and the needs of the group’s most sophisticated clients. Pictet has developed responsible-investment capabilities since the 1990s and has promoted thematic strategies addressing environmental and sustainability-related issues. The group’s public profile also includes the Prix Pictet, founded in 2008 to use photography to explore environmental and social problems. At the same time, Pictet has faced legal scrutiny related to historical offshore banking practices. In December 2023 it resolved a US investigation into assistance allegedly provided to US taxpayers who concealed assets and income from the Internal Revenue Service between 2008 and 2014. The resolution did not alter the group’s basic business model, but it remains an important part of Pictet’s institutional history and compliance narrative.
