It was launched on 15 May 2019 on the initiative of the Permanent Representation of the Republic of Tatarstan in Saint Petersburg and Leningrad Oblast, and was founded by Ravil Zakirov, a Tatar public figure in Saint Petersburg who also serves as the portal's editor-in-chief. The portal operates in Tatar, Russian, and English, and has expanded its activities beyond news publishing to include online interviews, lectures, concerts, quizzes, and other cultural and educational events. It is closely associated with the Petersburg Tatar Media Forum, which it has organized since 2019. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the portal shifted many of its activities online, including events marking the 100th anniversary of the Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic and the 75th anniversary of Victory Day. As a digital platform brand, Piter.Tatar functions as a community media outlet and social network hub, with a mobile application and presence on multiple social media channels including Telegram, VKontakte, Odnoklassniki, RuTube, and YouTube. It is owned and operated by its founder Ravil Zakirov and a team of Tatar bloggers and journalists based in Saint Petersburg.

History

Piter.Tatar was launched on 15 May 2019 on the initiative of the Permanent Representation of the Republic of Tatarstan in Saint Petersburg and Leningrad Oblast. The portal was founded by Ravil Zakirov, a Tatar public figure in Saint Petersburg, who became its editor-in-chief. From its inception, the portal covered the activities of Tatar communities in the region and published news and event listings for Tatar cultural and social events. On 31 October 2019, on the initiative of editor Ravil Zakirov, the first Petersburg Tatar Media Forum was held in a round-table format, bringing together representatives of Tatar communities in the city. This became an annual event. From March 2020, during the coronavirus pandemic, the portal began actively conducting events online, including events dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (TASSR) and the 75th anniversary of Victory Day. On 31 October 2020, the II Petersburg Tatar Media Forum was held online, and later, on 12 December, an online conference was held dedicated to the 115th anniversary of the newspaper "Nur": Tatar Periodical Print Publications: Retrospective and Future. On 21 November 2021, following the III Petersburg Tatar Media Forum "Tatar Communication Platforms — Face to Face", the Union of Tatar Portals was established. In December 2022, the portal became a laureate of the XIII International Internet Projects Competition "Belem Jauhari" (Pearls of Knowledge) organized by the Tatnet Development Fund, winning 1st place in the "Most Useful and Popular Tatar Video Blog/Video Channel" nomination, 3rd place in the "Most Useful and Popular Tatar Mobile Service, Script or Application" nomination, and a laureate award in the "Most Useful and Popular Internet Project in the Field of Culture, Tourism and Friendship of Peoples" nomination.
