Overview
Pledis Entertainment is a South Korean music and artist-management company founded in Seoul in 2007 by Han Sung-soo. Its name refers to the Pleiades, the star cluster in the constellation Taurus. The company began as a small agency operating from a practice room and developed a business centered on artist discovery, trainee development, recorded music, live performance, entertainment production, and international fan operations. Son Dam-bi was Pledis's first artist to debut. The agency expanded its idol portfolio with After School in 2009. After School's rotating-member format and several successful sub-units, including Orange Caramel, helped establish Pledis as a distinctive player in the Korean entertainment market. The company also used its artist roster for the annual Happy Pledis charity releases, directing proceeds and related activities toward organizations and communities in need. Pledis entered the boy-group market with NU'EST in 2012 and briefly pursued a joint venture with Fantagio that produced Hello Venus. Its most consequential development came with the launch of SEVENTEEN in 2015. The thirteen-member group was trained and developed over several years and became one of the most commercially successful K-pop acts associated with the company. SEVENTEEN's performance structure, self-produced music, unit system, and international touring helped transform Pledis from a mid-sized Korean agency into a globally recognized label. The company also developed Pristin, a girl group that debuted in 2017 after a pre-debut period as Pledis Girlz. Although Pristin later disbanded in 2019, Pledis continued to reshape its roster through contract renewals, departures, transfers, and new artist development. Former or affiliated acts have included After School, Orange Caramel, NU'EST, Pristin, fromis_9, Son Dam-bi, Kahi, Han Dong-geun, and others. Pledis's work with survival-show participants also connected the company to project groups such as I.O.I and to later HYBE-associated artists. In 2020, Big Hit Entertainment, later renamed HYBE Corporation, acquired a majority stake in Pledis. The transaction placed Pledis within HYBE's multi-label structure while preserving it as an independently operated label. Pledis subsequently moved into HYBE's Yongsan headquarters and continued to manage its own artists and releases. HYBE's corporate infrastructure expanded Pledis's ability to distribute music and operate globally, while Pledis retained a recognizable creative identity built around performance-oriented idol groups. After NU'EST concluded its group activities in 2022 and fromis_9 departed at the end of 2024, Pledis's active roster became more concentrated around SEVENTEEN, solo artist Hwang Min-hyun, producer Bumzu, and the new boy group TWS. TWS debuted in January 2024 with the concept of “boyhood pop,” emphasizing youthful energy and accessible melodies. Pledis remains an active HYBE label with operations spanning music production, artist management, concerts, fan engagement, content, and related entertainment services.
History
Pledis Entertainment was established in 2007 by Han Sung-soo. Its early operations were modest, but the company soon built visibility through soloist Son Dam-bi, followed by the debut of After School in January 2009. After School used a flexible membership concept and became the foundation of Pledis's early identity. Orange Caramel, formed in 2010 from After School members Nana, Lizzy, and Raina, gave the company a separate channel for colorful and highly stylized pop releases. Pledis also began linking entertainment activity with charitable work. The Happy Pledis series started in 2010 and featured company artists, with proceeds directed toward charitable causes. A second release followed in 2011, and artists and fans also participated in community service, including coal-briquette deliveries to low-income households. The label debuted NU'EST in March 2012 and entered a partnership with Fantagio that produced Hello Venus. It also explored cross-border cooperation with China's Yuehua Entertainment, leading to the NU'EST-M project. These arrangements were later dissolved or restructured, illustrating the experimentation typical of Pledis's expansion period. Several After School members subsequently graduated or left as their contracts ended. SEVENTEEN debuted in May 2015 after an extended training period. The group was organized around performance, hip-hop, and vocal units and developed a reputation for active participation in choreography, songwriting, and production. Its growth became the central turning point in Pledis's history, providing the company with a durable global flagship act. In 2016, Pledis formed the pre-debut team Pledis Girlz. Following activities connected to Produce 101 and I.O.I, the team was renamed Pristin and debuted in March 2017. Pristin disbanded in May 2019, with some members remaining temporarily and others leaving the agency. During the same period, NU'EST renewed its relationship with Pledis, while members of After School and other artists departed as contracts expired. By 2019, Pledis's ownership was divided between Han Sung-soo and Sony Music Solutions, then known as Solasia Entertainment. In May and June 2020, Big Hit Entertainment acquired enough shares to become the majority shareholder. The acquisition was approved by South Korea's Fair Trade Commission in October. Pledis joined HYBE's multi-label structure but continued to operate as a separate label. In 2021, Pledis moved with other HYBE labels to HYBE's Yongsan headquarters. Pledis's post-acquisition period included major artist and management changes. All thirteen SEVENTEEN members renewed their contracts in 2021. fromis_9 transferred to Pledis management that year, while NU'EST's contract cycle ended in 2022 and the group disbanded. Founder Han Sung-soo stepped down as CEO in 2022, followed by later executive changes. Pledis announced TWS in late 2023, and the group debuted in January 2024 with a youth-oriented “boyhood pop” direction. fromis_9 departed at the end of 2024, and Baekho left the company in 2025 after his contract expired. The company remains an active HYBE label focused on music, artist management, live performance, and international fan engagement.
