Overview

Portet (also known as Grand Portet or Centre commercial Portet) is a shopping centre located in Portet-sur-Garonne, in the Haute-Garonne department of south-western France, about 20 minutes from central Toulouse. It opened in 1972 and has long been a leading retail destination for the Toulouse metropolitan area. The centre is anchored by a Carrefour hypermarket that was for many years the largest in France, covering some 24,400 m² at its peak before being reduced to around 18,000 m² in 2008. The shopping gallery has grown over the decades and today hosts dozens of stores, restaurants and services. The centre is owned and managed by Klépierre, a major European shopping-centre company. Under Klépierre, Portet has undergone renovation and repositioning, including a significant extension and modernisation programme. The official website describes it as the "safe bet of the Toulouse region" and notes that it celebrated its 40th anniversary with a renewal. It offers 64 stores, 9 restaurants and 3,983 parking spaces, along with services such as gift cards, stroller loans, phone charging, Amazon Lockers, Mondial Relay, a drive service and electric-vehicle charging. Portet has historically served as a testing ground for Carrefour retail concepts, including self-scanning (Scan'lib), automated checkouts and the Carrefour drive service, which was first introduced in the Toulouse region at this store in 2011. The centre also hosts events and animations, from fashion shows to sports demonstrations, and maintains an active community presence on social media. It remains a key retail hub in the Midi-Pyrénées region.

History

The Portet shopping centre opened in 1972 in Portet-sur-Garonne, a suburb of Toulouse, around a Carrefour hypermarket that initially covered nearly 2.5 hectares (24,400 m²). At the time, it was the largest Carrefour hypermarket in France, a title it held until 2008. The original shopping gallery was limited compared to today's offer. Carrefour Portet became a showcase and testing ground for the group, pioneering the hypermarket concept itself—combining food and non-food ranges, large parking, a petrol station and financial services under one roof with a single checkout. In 1999, it introduced a non-food zone that became standard in many hypermarkets. However, by 2007 it was the least profitable Carrefour hypermarket per square metre in France, and in 2008 the store was reduced by 6,000 m² to 18,000 m², still one of the group's largest. The space freed up was converted into additional shopping gallery and restaurants. In the late 2000s and early 2010s, Portet continued to test new services: in 2009 it introduced self-checkout (Caisses Libres Services) and the Scan'lib self-scanning system, both later rolled out across Carrefour hypermarkets. In October 2010 it adopted the "ligne bleue" to reduce checkout waiting times, and on 12 October 2011 it became the first Carrefour store in the Toulouse region to offer the Carrefour drive service. The shopping gallery, last extensively renovated in 1990, had grown to 86 boutiques by March 2019. A major extension and renovation project was presented to the CDAC commission in June 2014 and received approval for road access improvements, gallery extension and renovation, and a full renovation of the Carrefour store. The plan included around 50 new stores (over 8,500 m² GLA), bringing the total to 170 boutiques, plus a new 500-space multi-storey car park and a new access road from the A64 motorway. In late 2015, the centre welcomed the largest Joué Club store in France. The Carrefour hypermarket itself was fully renovated from the first half of 2015 with new Carrefour concepts. Today, Portet is part of the Klépierre group and presents itself as a modern, diverse shopping destination with 64 stores, 9 restaurants and extensive services. It continues to host events and animations, from fashion shows to sports demonstrations, and maintains a strong community presence.
