Overview

Port's Devils (Catalan: Diables de Port) is a folkloric group based in the Marina del Port neighborhood of Barcelona, Spain. Founded in 1996 by a group of people with experience in similar associations, the colla was officially named in 1999 under the auspices of the Centre Cultural del Port. The group is part of Barcelona's traditional festive culture, performing devil dances (correfocs) and percussion. It also manages the Gegants de la Marina, a collection of giant figures, and includes a children's devil group, Espurnes del Port, and a drumming group. The association has performed throughout Catalonia and even in Sarajevo, commemorating ten years of twinning with Barcelona. As a cultural association rather than a commercial company, it operates as a non-profit entity. Its website, diablesdeport.com, serves as its online presence.

History

Port's Devils (Diables de Port) was born in the Marina del Port neighborhood of Barcelona in 1996, driven by a group of people who had participated in similar associations. The colla, framed within the Centre Cultural del Port, was officially baptized three years later, in 1999. At the ceremony, the Diables de Sants acted as godparents, with the Drac Capellà d'Horta-Carmel and the Skamot Diabòlic de l'Hospitalet de Llobregat as witnesses. That same year, the children's devil group, Espurnes del Port, and the drumming group were created. This percussion group accompanies the performances of both colles and also performs on its own. The Diables de Port actively participate in the festive life of the Zona Franca de Barcelona, but have made public appearances throughout the city and also in other parts of Catalonia—such as Lleida and Girona—and the Balearic Islands. They even traveled to Sarajevo for an event commemorating ten years of twinning with Barcelona, following Catalan collaboration in the city's reconstruction after the Bosnian War. The association is also responsible for the Gegants de la Marina. It first recovered the figures of Quimeta and Magí, two giants that had not appeared in neighborhood festivities for many years. Later, those of Paco Candel, the capgrossos, and the Campisdrak, the giant of the children's group, were added. The appearances of these giants are accompanied by music from their own gralla group.
