Overview

Precisely Software, LLC, doing business as Precisely, is a United States-based enterprise software company whose products help organizations make data more accurate, connected, governed, enriched, and usable. The company traces its origins to Whitlow Computer Systems, founded in 1968 by Duane Whitlow and Stan Rintel to develop software for mainframe computers. Its early commercial success came from Syncsort, a high-speed sorting utility designed as a compatible replacement for IBM's mainframe sort program. Because sorting was a routine and performance-sensitive part of large-scale batch processing, Syncsort became deeply embedded in IBM mainframe environments during the 1970s and 1980s. The business adopted the Syncsort name around 1981 and gradually expanded beyond sorting. During the 1990s it developed Unix-based sorting and backup products and worked in data-protection technologies. In 2004 it introduced DMExpress, adding extract, transform, and load capabilities, metadata management, and job-management functions. This marked a broader move from infrastructure utilities toward data integration and enterprise data management. Ownership and strategy changed repeatedly during the following decade. A group of financial investors acquired a majority interest in 2008. The company separated its data-protection business in 2013, allowing Syncsort to concentrate more heavily on integration and data-management software. It subsequently acquired businesses involved in mainframe migration, network monitoring, security, mainframe tooling, data quality, and master data management. Acquisitions of Circle Computer Group, William Data Systems, Cogito, and Trillium expanded its reach from traditional mainframe workloads into broader data and analytics environments. Clearlake Capital acquired Syncsort in 2015, and Centerbridge Partners later acquired Syncsort together with Vision Solutions in 2017. Under the positioning phrase “Big Iron to Big Data,” the company emphasized its ability to connect legacy mainframe systems with modern analytics and cloud architectures. In 2019 it acquired the software and data business of Pitney Bowes in a transaction reported at $700 million. That deal substantially increased the company's scale and added data-enrichment and location-related capabilities. In May 2020, Syncsort adopted the Precisely name. The rebrand presented the company as a broader data-integrity provider rather than primarily a mainframe utility vendor. Its portfolio became organized around five broad areas: Integrate, covering data integration and automation; Verify, covering data quality, governance, observability, and master data management; Locate, covering geocoding, mapping, spatial analytics, and location intelligence; Enrich, covering external data and enrichment services; and Engage, covering customer communications. These capabilities are also brought together in the Precisely Data Integrity Suite, a cloud-oriented platform intended to help enterprises manage data across heterogeneous systems. In 2021, Clearlake Capital Group, working with TA Associates, re-acquired Precisely. The company then expanded through acquisitions including Infogix, Winshuttle, Anchor Point, and CEDAR CX. In 2022 it acquired PlaceIQ, strengthening its location-intelligence business, and in 2023 it acquired Transerve, an Indian location-intelligence provider. Precisely serves large enterprises and operates internationally. The company reported more than 12,000 customers and more than 2,000 employees in 2021. Its current identity combines long-standing mainframe expertise with software and data services for integration, governance, quality management, enrichment, geospatial analysis, and customer communications.

History

Precisely began in 1968 as Whitlow Computer Systems, founded by Duane Whitlow and Stan Rintel to create mainframe software. Its breakthrough product was Syncsort, a fast sorting utility compatible with IBM mainframe workflows. The product could replace IBM's utility without requiring changes to application code or job-control instructions, which helped it gain adoption among large organizations processing sequential files and batch workloads. A 1972 Computerworld article brought the young company wider attention and contributed to additional investment and international expansion. Aso O. Tavitian became chief executive in 1975 and led the business through much of its formative growth. The company changed its name to Syncsort around 1981. By the 1980s, Syncsort held a strong position in IBM mainframe sorting, and it later developed products for Unix, backup and recovery, data protection, and other enterprise environments. In 2004, DMExpress extended the portfolio into ETL, metadata management, and job management. During the 2000s and 2010s, ownership by financial investors accompanied a strategic shift away from being principally a mainframe utility provider. Syncsort separated its data-protection business in 2013 and concentrated on integration, migration, data quality, and analytics-related software. A sequence of acquisitions expanded the business. Circle Computer Group added mainframe migration expertise, William Data Systems brought network monitoring and security technology, Cogito strengthened mainframe software, and Trillium added data quality and master data management. Clearlake Capital acquired Syncsort in 2015; Centerbridge later acquired it together with Vision Solutions in 2017. The resulting business promoted a bridge between “big iron” mainframes and modern big-data systems. In 2019, Syncsort purchased the software and data business of Pitney Bowes. The transaction added enrichment and location capabilities and significantly increased the company's size. In 2020, the company rebranded as Precisely, presenting data integrity as the organizing idea for its portfolio. The new structure grouped products into Integrate, Verify, Locate, Enrich, and Engage, covering integration, quality and governance, geospatial intelligence, external enrichment data, and customer communications. Clearlake Capital, in partnership with TA Associates, re-acquired Precisely in 2021. The company continued broadening its portfolio through acquisitions of Infogix, Winshuttle, Anchor Point, and CEDAR CX in 2021, PlaceIQ in 2022, and Transerve in 2023. These transactions reinforced its focus on data governance, automation, risk data, customer engagement, and location intelligence. Precisely now presents the Data Integrity Suite as a unified SaaS-oriented platform while continuing to serve enterprises with substantial mainframe, IBM i, cloud, and distributed-data estates.
