Overview
Primetals Technologies is an engineering, technology, and plant-construction company focused on the metals industry. Headquartered in London, it supplies equipment, process technology, automation, digital systems, engineering, project execution, and metallurgical services to producers of steel and nonferrous metals. Its portfolio is intended to cover the production chain from raw-material preparation and reduction through steelmaking, casting, rolling, finishing, plant modernization, and ongoing operational support. The company began operations in January 2015 as a joint venture between Mitsubishi-Hitachi Metals Machinery and Siemens. At formation, Mitsubishi-Hitachi Metals Machinery held 51 percent and Siemens held 49 percent. The venture combined Mitsubishi's rolling-mill and downstream-metals capabilities with Siemens VAI's long history in ironmaking, steelmaking, casting, rolling, automation, and metallurgical plant engineering. This heritage reaches back through Mitsubishi-Hitachi Metals Machinery and through the Austrian VAI organization, whose technological lineage included the development and international deployment of the Linz-Donawitz oxygen-steelmaking process. Primetals describes itself as a full-line supplier. Its technologies include beneficiation, direct reduction, blast-furnace and ironmaking-related systems, basic oxygen and electric-arc steelmaking, secondary metallurgy, continuous casting, hot and cold rolling, strip processing, and associated plant services. It also works on automation, process control, digitalization, artificial intelligence, robotics, predictive or condition-based services, and safety improvements. These capabilities allow the company to act both as a supplier of individual process units and as an engineering partner for integrated plants, modernization programs, and lifecycle support. The business serves customers in multiple regions rather than operating as a consumer-facing brand. Its work is project-based and commonly involves complex industrial assets, long implementation periods, specialized process know-how, and continuing service relationships. Its customer base includes steel producers and other metals companies seeking new capacity, improved productivity, higher product quality, lower operating costs, or compliance with changing environmental requirements. Environmental performance has become an increasingly prominent part of the company's positioning. In 2022, Primetals announced a global Green Steel task force intended to combine its metals-industry expertise with capabilities from the wider Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Group. The initiative addressed decarbonization pressures in steelmaking, including the industry's substantial contribution to global carbon dioxide emissions. Relevant technology areas include direct reduction, electric steelmaking, process optimization, energy efficiency, automation, and other approaches intended to reduce emissions and resource use. Ownership changed materially in 2020, when Mitsubishi Heavy Industries completed the acquisition of Siemens' 49 percent interest. Primetals subsequently continued as part of the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries group while also restructuring selected national operations. Its former France business was sold to Mutares in 2021 and renamed Clecim France, while the Italian subsidiary was transferred to Callista Private Equity later that year. Primetals remains an active international supplier of metallurgical technology and services.
History
Primetals Technologies was formed from two substantial industrial technology lineages. The Mitsubishi side developed through Mitsubishi-Hitachi Metals Machinery, established by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi in 2000 to handle sales and engineering for metal rolling mills and downstream facilities. The venture was renamed Mitsubishi-Hitachi Metals Machinery in 2002. During the following decade it expanded internationally, established regional operations, acquired or integrated businesses in rolling, coating, casting, induction, and related equipment, and took part in major projects in Asia and South America. The Siemens side derived primarily from VAI, the plant-building operation associated with Austria's VÖEST and later Voestalpine. VÖEST's postwar reconstruction created an important base for metallurgical engineering. Its Linz and Donawitz plants developed the oxygen-converter process now known as the LD or Linz-Donawitz process, with converters commissioned at Linz in 1952 and Donawitz in 1953. VAI subsequently became an international plant builder, supplying ironmaking, steelmaking, casting, rolling, automation, and services to customers across many countries. It expanded through the Vöest-Alpine and VA Technologie structures, acquired or integrated additional metals-equipment businesses, and developed technologies including COREX direct reduction or smelting-reduction systems. In 2005, Siemens completed its acquisition of VA Technologie AG, bringing VAI into the Siemens organization. The metals activities were subsequently operated under Siemens VAI and related Siemens metals-technology structures. Their portfolio included iron and steelmaking, rolling and processing, automation, continuous casting, and metallurgical services. The business also operated through international subsidiaries and service organizations, including activities in North America, Europe, Asia, and other industrial markets. In 2014, Mitsubishi-Hitachi Metals Machinery and Siemens announced the creation of a new joint venture. Primetals Technologies Limited began operations in January 2015, with Mitsubishi-Hitachi Metals Machinery owning 51 percent and Siemens 49 percent. The combination created a supplier with capabilities spanning the full metals-production chain rather than a company limited to a single equipment category. The venture continued to broaden its portfolio. In 2019, Primetals Technologies and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries acquired ABP Induction Systems. That same year, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Siemens agreed that MHI would purchase Siemens' remaining 49 percent interest. Completion at the end of January 2020 made Primetals part of the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries group. The company also reorganized parts of its national network. In spring 2021, Mutares completed the acquisition of Primetals Technologies France, which was subsequently renamed Clecim France. Later in 2021, Primetals transferred its shares in Primetals Technologies Italy to Callista Private Equity. In the 2020s, decarbonization became a central strategic theme. In May 2022, Primetals announced a global Green Steel task force designed to coordinate its metallurgical expertise with capabilities elsewhere in Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. The effort reflects the steel sector's pressure to lower emissions through technologies such as direct reduction, electric steelmaking, improved process control, energy efficiency, automation, and digital optimization. Primetals today operates as an international engineering and technology supplier for ferrous and nonferrous metals producers, combining plant design and construction with modernization, automation, digital services, and operational support.
