Overview
QuantX Labs is an Australian technology company specialising in high-precision timing and quantum sensor technologies. Established in 2016 as Cryoclock Pty Ltd to commercialise the CRYO ultra-low phase-noise oscillator, with intellectual property transferred from the University of Adelaide, the company rebranded to QuantX Labs in 2021 and is headquartered at Lot Fourteen in Adelaide, South Australia. It describes itself as a world leader in precision timing and quantum sensing, developing next-generation optical atomic clock and magnetometer technologies. The company's premise is that conventional positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) infrastructure is fragile: it relies on weak signals and backup networks that fail when adversaries jam them or when GNSS goes dark. QuantX builds quantum sensing and precision timing products engineered to hold accuracy regardless of conditions, so that modern networks, critical infrastructure and national communications remain secure. Its products are aimed at contested airspace, congested orbits, over-the-horizon radar, deep-space tracking, telecom networks, data centres and trading systems. QuantX organises its offering into four product families. CRYO is an ultra-low phase-noise oscillator with world-beating close-to-carrier phase noise and short-term frequency stability, built for over-the-horizon radar, deep-space tracking and high-precision timing. TEMPO is a family of compact optical atomic clocks providing ultra-high timing stability for terrestrial and space networks, developed in partnership with the University of Adelaide and ruggedised for LEO and MEO constellations. SENTIO is a compact ultra-high performance quantum magnetometer with extreme sensitivity (below 1 pT/√Hz) for defence, space and mining customers. SYNCHRO is a precision time and frequency synchroniser for resilient time transfer, synchronisation and distribution. The company's expertise spans atomics, photonics and precision engineering, developed by physicists and brought to life by engineering teams. Its customer base and programs span critical infrastructure, space, defence, telecommunications and navigation systems, with a strong emphasis on sovereign capability. QuantX has been recognised with awards including the Eureka Prize for Safeguarding Australia and double awards at the Avalon Airshow, and has worked with the Defence Science and Technology Group and BAE Systems on co-development programs. It remains a privately held company.
History
QuantX Labs traces its origins to 2016, when Cryoclock Pty Ltd was established to commercialise CRYO, an ultra-low phase-noise oscillator, with intellectual property transferred from the University of Adelaide. The company was founded around the research of Professor Andre Luiten, who has spent decades building ultra-precise clocks for radar systems, navigation satellites and telecommunications networks. In 2018 the company entered a phase-zero partnership with BAE Systems for CRYO development, and the CRYO team was awarded the Eureka Prize for Safeguarding Australia for what was described as the world's most precise clock. That same year Cryoclock delivered its first order, with the University of Sydney taking delivery of the first CRYO, and a Lot Fourteen tenancy was confirmed for assembly. In 2019 the company won double awards at the Avalon Airshow: an Innovation Award (Autonomous & Unmanned Systems and ISR) and Best SME in Defence Innovation. In 2020 Cryoclock engaged in defence procurement and co-development with Australia's Defence Science and Technology Group. In 2021 the company moved into Lot Fourteen, with new facilities formally launched by the Hon Steven Marshall, then Premier of South Australia. Also in 2021, Cryoclock won the Quantum Technology Challenge with SENTIO, and Army HQ funded a demonstration of a quantum magnetometer array detecting covert subterranean activity. The company then formally changed its name from Cryoclock to QuantX Labs, reflecting a broadening beyond its original oscillator product into a wider portfolio of quantum sensing and precision timing technologies. QuantX Labs today describes itself as a world leader in high-precision timing and quantum sensor technologies, building products for significant and globally relevant programs that support sovereign capability. Its expertise is sought for applications spanning critical infrastructure, space, defence, telecommunications and navigation systems. The company's four product families — CRYO, TEMPO, SENTIO and SYNCHRO — turn roughly two decades of research into deployable capability, from the world's purest frequency source to quantum magnetometers and optical clocks in orbit. TEMPO was developed in partnership with the University of Adelaide and is based on Nobel-Prize-winning breakthroughs in optical atomic clocks. The company remains privately held and headquartered at Lot Fourteen in Adelaide.
