Overview
Quart Creixent is a historic independent bookshop located in the old town of Palma de Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands, Spain. It was inaugurated on 12 February 1982 and is widely recognised as a pioneer in the exclusive sale of books in Catalan. The shop is situated on Carrer Rubí, very close to Plaça Major, and has been a cultural landmark for Catalan-language literature for over four decades. The bookshop was founded by Antoni Artigues, Jaume Corbera and Maria Pons, who left the project shortly afterwards. Arnau Amer and Dolors Fernández later joined, followed by Miquel Serra and Jerònia Oliver. From the outset, Quart Creixent only sold books, magazines, records, videos and games in Catalan, with the aim of giving the Catalan book the normality that the language lacked in society. Quart Creixent sells a wide range of Catalan-language books across genres including fiction, poetry, history, children's literature and essays, as well as magazines, music and games. Its online catalogue features titles from major Catalan publishers such as Destino, Columna, Rosa dels Vents, El Cep i la Nansa Edicions, Edicions Sidilla and Lo Diable Gros. The shop also hosts book presentations, signings and cultural events. Over the years the bookshop has received several awards, including the Francesc de Borja Moll prize from the Obra Cultural Balear (2006), a special mention in the III Premi Llengua Nacional (2020), the XXIX Premi Santa Anneta from Titoieta Radio (2022) and the 2022 Commerce Prize from the business organisation PIMEM. In February 2022 it celebrated its 40th anniversary with a series of events in and outside the shop, including a vermouth with a xeremiers party on 12 February and the musical show Ferments by Miquel Brunet at the Teatre Xesc Forteza in Palma. The anniversary poster featured a drawing by Damià Jaume, who had also designed the first poster for the inauguration, accompanied by a poem by the award-winning writer Antoni Vidal Ferrando. Quart Creixent remains an active, privately owned bookshop and a reference point for Catalan culture in Mallorca.
History
Quart Creixent was inaugurated on 12 February 1982 in Palma de Mallorca, with the presence of the poet Joan Brossa, who presented his book Vint-i-set sextines i un sonet. The founders were Antoni Artigues, Jaume Corbera and Maria Pons, who left the project shortly afterwards. Later, Arnau Amer and Dolors Fernández joined, and somewhat later Miquel Serra and Jerònia Oliver. The bookshop was born with the will to give the Catalan book the normality that the language did not have in society; for this reason, from the beginning Quart Creixent only sells books, magazines, records, videos and games in Catalan. It is located in the old town, on Carrer Rubí, very close to Plaça Major. On the occasion of its 25th anniversary, in February 2007 the book El dia a dia de Joan Brossa was presented, and the bookshop invited its customers to performances by Enric Casassas, Pascal Comelade and Josep Pascual, and by Joan Miquel Oliver and Antònia Font, at the Teatre Sans in Palma. Also on the occasion of its 25th anniversary, the bookshop received one of the 2006 Premis 31-D from the Obra Cultural Balear: the Francesc de Borja Moll prize. In November 2020 it was recognised with a "special mention" of the III Premi Llengua Nacional. In February 2022 it celebrated its 40th anniversary with a series of events in the bookshop and outside, the most notable of which were the vermouth with a xeremiers party on the 12th – the exact anniversary day – and the musical show Ferments, by Miquel Brunet, at the Teatre Xesc Forteza in Palma, lent for the occasion by the City Council. All the media on the island (radios, television, press) reported on it. Furthermore, as an emblem of the celebration, it had a poster with a drawing by Damià Jaume (already the author of the first poster for the inauguration) accompanied by a poem by the award-winning Santanyí writer Antoni Vidal Ferrando; the drawing by Damià Jaume served as the background for the advertising posters of all the commemorative events of the 40 years throughout 2022. In July 2022 Titoieta Radio awarded it the XXIX Premi Santa Anneta, and in November of the same year the business organisation PIMEM awarded it the 2022 Commerce Prize.
