Overview

QuickBooks is the small-business accounting software brand of Intuit Inc., the American financial-technology company headquartered in Mountain View, California. Intuit was founded in 1983 by Scott Cook and Tom Proulx, and QuickBooks was introduced in the early 1990s as an easy-to-use bookkeeping package for small businesses and their accountants, displacing manual ledgers and more complex enterprise accounting systems. Over time it became the de facto standard for small-business accounting in the United States. The brand spans two main product families. QuickBooks Desktop is the long-running installed software line (Pro, Premier, Enterprise and Mac editions), while QuickBooks Online is the cloud subscription platform that has become the growth engine, sold in tiers and extended through payroll, payments, invoicing, lending and time-tracking add-ons. Intuit also operates related QuickBooks services such as QuickBooks Payroll, QuickBooks Payments and QuickBooks Checking, and it maintains a large ecosystem of third-party app integrations and a network of accounting professionals (QuickBooks ProAdvisor). QuickBooks is sold primarily in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and India, with localized versions and partner channels. It is positioned as the leading accounting and financial-management platform for small businesses and self-employed people, competing with cloud accounting rivals such as Xero, FreshBooks, Sage and Zoho Books. Intuit reports QuickBooks Online accounting as a core growth metric in its investor disclosures. Ownership sits with Intuit Inc., which is publicly traded on Nasdaq under the ticker INTU. QuickBooks is therefore a product brand and subsidiary brand within Intuit rather than a standalone company. Its market position rests on breadth of features, accountant familiarity, and the integration of accounting with payments, payroll and lending — a strategy Intuit has pursued since the 1990s and accelerated with the cloud transition.

History

QuickBooks emerged from Intuit, the company Scott Cook and Tom Proulx founded in 1983 to automate personal and small-business finance. Intuit's early success came with Quicken, a personal-finance package, and the company then moved into small-business accounting. QuickBooks was launched in the early 1990s as a simpler alternative to double-entry accounting systems used by larger firms, aimed at owners who kept books by hand or relied on an accountant. Its DOS and later Windows versions, followed by Mac editions, spread quickly through small businesses and accounting practices, and QuickBooks became the reference product for small-business bookkeeping in the United States. Through the 1990s and 2000s Intuit expanded the brand beyond core bookkeeping: QuickBooks Payroll, merchant services and industry-specific editions (Pro, Premier, Enterprise) were added, and the QuickBooks ProAdvisor program built a network of accounting professionals who recommended and supported the software. Intuit also fought off Microsoft's attempted acquisition in the mid-1990s and grew the franchise through retail and direct channels. The major turning point came with the cloud. Intuit introduced QuickBooks Online in the 2000s and progressively shifted investment and marketing toward the subscription web platform, which offered automatic updates, multi-device access and an app marketplace. As cloud adoption accelerated in the 2010s, QuickBooks Online became the primary growth driver, and Intuit began steering new customers to it while continuing to support Desktop editions. Intuit also divested or de-emphasized some non-core businesses to concentrate on the small-business and accounting platform. In the 2010s and 2020s Intuit broadened QuickBooks from accounting into an integrated financial platform, tying the brand to payments, payroll, lending (QuickBooks Capital), time tracking and banking-like services such as QuickBooks Checking. Intuit's acquisitions of Mailchimp and Credit Karma extended the parent company's data and marketing capabilities around the small-business customer base. QuickBooks remains the flagship small-business brand of Intuit and is reported as a key growth metric in the company's public results.
