Rationaltheater

Rationaltheater is a theater in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. Since 1965 it has been an institution in Munich. It describes itself as one of the most beautiful and oldest private theaters in Munich and one of the few documentary theaters in Germany, producing exclusively world premieres that engage with current, socially relevant themes. It has no permanent ensemble and works in the manner of a think tank: suitable material is sought first, then a play is developed with authors, and finally a team is cast based on the new script.

Since 1965 Rationaltheater has been an institution in Munich. The cabaret artist Reiner Uthoff, who led the stage for 40 years, founded the theater together with Horst Reichel and Ekkehart Kühn. He staged over 35 plays and performed them together with Jochen Busse, Otto Sander, Sigi Zimmerschied, Bruno Jonas and many others. Rationaltheater was not limited to cabaret: Ingrid Caven, for whom her husband Rainer Werner Fassbinder had written many songs, gave her first public concert here in 1976. Günter Wallraff, Martin Walser and Christian Müller worked for the theater as co-authors. The programs at Rationaltheater were nonconformist from the beginning. The play TATORT VATIKAN, about the Vatican's financial conduct, set off the first wave of church departures in the Federal Republic of Germany and met with counter-demonstrations, as in Hof, where incensed nuns gathered in front of the Freiheitshalle; Friedrichshafen closed its Stadthalle in advance. The program KNAST-1.DEUTSCHES SING SING SPIEL started a prison tour in the JVA Heilbronn and thus had a not insignificant share in the realization of penal reform. Rationaltheater was also involved in the resignation of Federal President Dr. Heinrich Lübke by exposing his Nazi past. The consequences included not only criminal proceedings for blasphemy, insulting the head of state and other offenses, but also nationwide fame for Rationaltheater.
