Overview

RCI Banque SA is a French automotive finance company wholly owned by Renault and integrated into Renault Group’s Mobilize business. Although its legal name remains RCI Banque, the company has traded as Mobilize Financial Services since 2022. Its principal role is to support vehicle sales and ownership across Renault Group brands, including Renault, Dacia, Alpine and Mobilize, while also providing financing for Nissan brands in several international markets and for Mitsubishi Motors in the Netherlands. The company’s activities extend beyond traditional vehicle loans. It provides financing for new and used vehicles, leases, rentals with purchase options, long-term rental arrangements, dealer working-capital needs, maintenance packages, extended warranties, roadside assistance, insurance, fleet-management services and selected payment products. It has also developed savings and deposit-gathering operations in several countries, helping diversify its funding base beyond wholesale financial markets. In France, its ZESTO internet savings account, introduced in 2012, was an early example of an automaker-affiliated bank targeting the general public rather than only vehicle buyers. Renault established the business in 1974 as Société Financière de Renault, or Sofiren, to finance dealer sales and manage Renault’s European cash flows. It adopted the name Renault Crédit International in 1980 and merged with Diac in 1990. Diac traced its own origins to a vehicle-credit business created in 1924 by Louis Renault. Following the creation of the Renault–Nissan Alliance, RCI acquired Nissan’s European finance affiliates in 1999, substantially expanding its geographic reach and brand coverage. The company adopted the RCI Banque name in 2001, changed its commercial identity to RCI Bank and Services in 2016, and was incorporated into the Mobilize unit’s broader mobility strategy in 2022. RCI Banque has progressively expanded into digital sales and mobility services. Examples include online payment and vehicle-booking tools in Brazil, fully digital vehicle-finance journeys for Dacia customers in the United Kingdom, and investments in taxi, ride-hailing and fleet-management technology companies. Its mobility-related portfolio has included interests in Karhoo, Yuso, Marcel and iCabbi, while Mobilize Insurance and Mobilize Lease&Co broadened the group’s offer into usage-based insurance and long-term rental. The company is a significant European automotive lender and a major issuer of auto-loan asset-backed securities. It was classified as a significant institution under European Banking Supervision in 2015 and is consequently directly supervised by the European Central Bank. In 2020, the business reported approximately €17.8 billion in new financing and 4.6 million service contracts, while deposits collected from retail customers reached €20.5 billion at year-end. These figures describe the company’s historical scale and should not be treated as current performance indicators without newer reporting. RCI Banque remains strategically tied to Renault’s vehicle distribution system: its financing products are designed to support sales, increase customer retention and package vehicles with services over the ownership lifecycle. Its evolution into Mobilize Financial Services reflects Renault’s effort to position captive finance as part of a wider mobility ecosystem rather than solely as a back-office lending operation.

History

Renault founded the business in 1974 as Société Financière de Renault, commonly called Sofiren. Its original purpose was closely connected to Renault’s distribution system: it financed dealer and customer purchases and helped manage the automaker’s cash flows in Europe. On 27 June 1980, the company adopted the name Renault Crédit International, or RCI. In 1990, RCI merged with Diac, a vehicle-finance company whose origins went back to 1924, when Louis Renault created a credit operation in response to financing constraints affecting vehicle sales. Diac remained an important operating subsidiary and continued to focus on vehicle credit. By 1990, the combined finance activity represented more than one-third of Renault Group’s net income, illustrating the strategic importance of captive finance to the automobile manufacturer. The creation of the Renault–Nissan Alliance at the end of the 1990s prompted a major international expansion. In 1999, RCI acquired five Nissan financial affiliates in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Italy, Germany and Spain for €294 million. It also expanded financing activity in Central and South America, allowing the finance arm to support both Renault and Nissan vehicle distribution. In November 2001, the company formally adopted the name RCI Banque. The business later broadened from vehicle lending into savings, insurance, digital commerce and mobility services. In February 2012, it launched ZESTO, an internet savings account aimed at the general public in France. This was an unusual initiative for an automaker-owned finance company and gave RCI a retail-deposit funding source. The German equivalent, RCI Bank Direkt, followed in 2013. RCI also opened savings operations in the United Kingdom in 2015 and obtained a UK banking licence in 2019. Deposit gathering subsequently expanded to Spain. During the second half of the 2010s, RCI invested in technology companies serving taxis, ride-hailing and fleet operators. It became the majority shareholder of Karhoo in 2017, acquired Class and Co, the parent of Yuso and Marcel, later that year, and acquired a 75% interest in iCabbi in 2018. These moves reflected an attempt to connect automotive finance with broader mobility and fleet-management services. The company also relocated its headquarters from Noisy-le-Roi to Paris in January 2018, while Diac retained the former site. RCI developed digital vehicle-purchase and financing channels in several markets. In Brazil, its electronic payment process was used for a portion of Renault Kwid bookings in 2018. In the United Kingdom, Dacia customers could complete financing and repayment-related steps online through the Dacia Buy Online service. The company also supported Mitsubishi Motors sales in the Netherlands through a partnership announced in 2018. In 2015, RCI Banque was classified as a significant institution under European Banking Supervision and became subject to direct European Central Bank supervision. Its financing business remained focused on new and used vehicles, leasing, rentals, dealer liquidity and ancillary services, while its deposit business became a substantial source of funding. Historical 2020 figures cited for the group included €17.8 billion of new financing, 1,520,330 financed contracts and 4.6 million service contracts. Retail deposits in France, Germany, Austria, the United Kingdom, Brazil and Spain totaled €20.5 billion at the end of that year. At the end of 2022, the group launched Mobilize Lease&Co, a long-term rental company. The company made its first two acquisitions in Germany in July 2023. These initiatives followed Renault’s effort to place finance, insurance, rental and other customer services within the Mobilize mobility platform. In May 2022, RCI Bank and Services therefore adopted the Mobilize Financial Services trade name. The legal entity continues to be RCI Banque SA, but its commercial identity now emphasizes integrated mobility services as well as conventional automotive finance.

Controversies

  • 2022

    Mackie Motors financing dispute

Scottish dealer Mackie Motors alleged that RCI Financial Services withdrew important financing and terminated contracts with only seven days’ notice in November 2021. The initial High Court claim and a later appeal were dismissed. Subsequent reported proceedings made broader allegations concerning access to operational systems and the roles of RCI, Renault UK and Nissan Motor (GB). The allegations are disputed and the litigation history should be treated as unresolved unless supported by final judgments.
