Overview

Redoute de Spa, now known as Casino de Spa, is a casino and arts centre in Spa, Belgium. According to its official website, it opened in 1763 as 'La Redoute' and is presented as the oldest casino in the world. The casino was acquired by Gaming1 in 2003 and today offers slot machines, traditional table games, poker, dining and events.

History

In the 18th century, members of the nobility who visited Spa for its thermal waters increasingly gathered for games, conversation and other entertainments. To legalise and give a prestigious venue to these evenings, the Casino de Spa, then called 'La Redoute', was created in 1763, becoming the first establishment where high society met to play, dance and drink. The croupiers of Spa, recognised for their experience and mastery of games, were invited to train the croupiers of the Casino de Monaco, which opened a century after the Casino de Spa. Over the years the Casino experienced several fires, reconstructions and renovations, served as a hospital and orphanage during a period when gambling was banned, and even served as an American headquarters during World War I. It also hosted major events such as a Miss Universe election in 1932 and the Festival international de la chanson française, which gave rise to the Francofolies. Today the Casino de Spa has returned to its original entertainment function and has continued to evolve thanks to its acquisition by Gaming1 in 2003. It then opened a smokers' terrace with 28 slot machines and enlarged the Casino restaurant.
