Overview
REGUPOL BSW is a German industrial company headquartered in Bad Berleburg, in the South Westphalia region. Founded in 1954 as BSW Berleburger Schaumstoffwerk GmbH, the company has specialized for decades in processing recovered and reprocessed plastics into durable, resource-efficient high-performance products. Its core material, REGUPOL, was developed in 1968 as a resilient, versatile, heavy-duty material, and it gave rise to a broad product family. The company renamed itself Regupol BSW GmbH in August 2019 after a brand relaunch, and in September 2023 it transferred its operating business and parts of its assets into Regupol Germany GmbH & Co. KG. REGUPOL serves four main markets: sports, acoustics, load securing, and construction, plus commercial flooring. In sports, it manufactures running tracks, safety and winter sports floors, and multipurpose pitch surfaces; its tracks have been installed in venues such as the Berlin Olympic Stadium, the Munich Olympic Stadium, the National Stadium of Jamaica, and the training facility of Usain Bolt's Racers Track Club. In acoustics, its products provide impact sound insulation and vibration isolation for residential, commercial, industrial, and rail applications. In load securing, REGUPOL anti-slip mats protect cargo under demanding conditions. In construction, it offers protection mats for flat roofs, including under photovoltaic systems, and commercial flooring for the contract sector. The company processes more than 90,000 tons of recycled elastomers each year and employs around 750 people worldwide. It operates international sales and production sites and has built subsidiaries and joint ventures in markets including the United States and Australia. REGUPOL is still a family enterprise, with the third and some of the fourth generation active in management. Its sustainability orientation has earned awards including the German Design Award, the iF Design Award, the Environmental Economy Award NRW, the Ecovadis Bronze Medal, the NRW Energy Efficiency Award, and Cradle to Cradle Certified® Bronze for selected products. World record holder Usain Bolt has promoted REGUPOL for years, and a REGUPOL track was installed at his Jamaican training base.
History
The company was incorporated in August 1954 as BSW Berleburger Schaumstoffwerk GmbH in Bad Berleburg, Germany. In September 1954 it began producing rebonded foam, developing a wide range of rebonded foam products, and built its first plant and offices at Hilgenacker in Bad Berleburg. In March 1968 BSW started developing REGUPOL, a resilient, versatile, heavy-duty material suitable for many applications. In June 1969 the company began manufacturing and selling the first REGUPOL sports surfaces for multipurpose pitches in Germany. By February 1970 it had started exporting, initially to Central European countries. In May 1970 REGUPOL Elastic Tiles and REGUPOL Interlocking Pavers were developed and first used. Over the following decades the company expanded internationally. In 1989 it began its first joint venture for production in the United States, and it was among the first German companies to build business ties with what is now Russia. In 2000 it founded its first subsidiary in Australia, followed by further subsidiaries and locations in subsequent years. In 2002 the material REGUFoam was developed. By 2006 REGUPOL employed around 500 people worldwide and generated annual revenue of over 100 million euros. A major marketing milestone came after the 2009 World Athletics Championships in Berlin, where Usain Bolt set world records of 9.58 seconds in the 100 meters and 19.19 seconds in the 200 meters on a blue REGUPOL running track at the Olympic Stadium. The company contacted Bolt, his coach Glen Mills, and his manager Ricky Simms about an advertising partnership; Bolt agreed, and a contract was signed, initially for five years, then renewed in 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2023. As part of the partnership, a REGUPOL training and competition track was built for Bolt and his Racers Track Club teammates at the UWI University campus in Kingston, Jamaica, and has been in use since 2010. REGUPOL products have been installed in prominent projects including the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the Berlin Olympic Stadium, the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin, the National Stadium in Jamaica, and the Shijingshan Cultural Center in China. In August 2019, following a brand relaunch, the company changed its name from BSW Berleburger Schaumstoffwerk GmbH to Regupol BSW GmbH. On September 27, 2023, Regupol BSW GmbH spun off its operating business and parts of its assets into Regupol Germany GmbH & Co. KG. The company remains a family enterprise, with the third and some of the fourth generation currently working in management.
