Overview
RIGA MAINZ GmbH & Co. KG (stylised as RIGA MAINZ, colloquially often just "Riga") is a German crane-service and heavy-transport company headquartered in Mainz, Rhineland-Palatinate. Founded in 1929 by Cuno Riga as CUNO RIGA in Mainz-Mombach, the business has remained a family enterprise across three generations and is today one of the largest crane companies in the Rhine-Main region. Its services span crane work, SPMT and heavy-haul transport, industrial assembly, machine relocations and cleanroom installation, delivered both locally in Germany and internationally. The company operates from its main site in Mainz plus locations in Frankfurt and Ludwigshafen, giving it short travel distances across the Rhine-Main and Rhine-Neckar regions. A large project-planning department designs customised, economical and reliable lifting and transport solutions for each job, and where useful the company develops its own equipment — for example a modular spreader-beam system that provides great flexibility when slinging loads. RIGA MAINZ has extensive experience in the power-plant and wind-power sectors, in supporting tunnel-construction projects and in operations within complex industrial plants. RIGA MAINZ first became known nationally through its entry in the Guinness Book of Records in 1985 with a 1,000-tonne telescopic mobile crane, the Gottwald AMK 1000, built as a one-off for the company over a two-year construction period. In recent years the firm has drawn attention again through numerous German television reports, including heavy transports and procedures for very special cargo such as a corkscrew factory or the KATRIN spectrometer for the Karlsruhe Research Centre. The company's history highlights include the Gottwald AMK 1000 mobile crane with folding outriggers, the replacement of the spire of Mainz Cathedral, and award-winning transport solutions in bridge refurbishment projects. As a family business now led by the third generation, RIGA MAINZ combines a high-performance fleet at the highest technical level with a motivated and qualified team that shares its passion for technology and engineering. The company publishes a regular in-house newspaper and maintains a YouTube channel and download area documenting its projects.
History
RIGA MAINZ was founded in 1929 as CUNO RIGA in Mainz-Mombach by Cuno Riga. After the company was reoriented, the first "Riga crane" with a 7.5-tonne lifting capacity was acquired in 1956. The first crane superstructure of the "Coles" brand was purchased in 1958. In the following years, ten lattice-boom mobile cranes were acquired. In 1967, Cuno Riga's daughter Inge took over the business together with her husband Friedel Langer. In the same year, the first telescopic mobile crane, a Gottwald AMK 65-42, was bought. In 1982, a 500-tonne Gottwald AMK 500-93 telescopic mobile crane with a 130-metre hook height was commissioned, and in 1985 the company deployed what was then the world's largest 1,000-tonne telescopic mobile crane from Gottwald. This Gottwald AMK 1000 was built as a one-off for RIGA MAINZ over a two-year construction period and earned the company an entry in the Guinness Book of Records. In 1993, the fleet was expanded with the Liebherr LGD 1800, an 800-tonne lattice-boom mobile crane. Uwe Langer took over management in 1998, establishing the third generation in the family business. RIGA MAINZ became a GmbH & Co. KG and invested in a 750-tonne Liebherr LR 1750/1 lattice-boom crawler crane. A year later, RIGA EISELE was founded. In 2001, RIGA MAINZ and Baumann jointly purchased a 28-axle Scheuerle SPMT, opening up new heavy-transport possibilities. In 2002, a high-bay warehouse was built and the company premises were expanded to 14,000 m². In 2003, RIGA MAINZ acquired ten new telescopic cranes ranging from the LTM 1030/2 to the LTM 1250/1. In 2006, RIGA EISELE GmbH was dissolved and Riga Baumann GmbH & Co. KG was founded. In 2007, the fleet was expanded with a further 12-axle Scheuerle SPMT. By 2010, the crane fleet included major units such as the Liebherr LR 1750/1 (in cooperation with Baumann), the Demag CC 2500-1 (in cooperation with Baumann), the Liebherr LTM 1500 TYN, the Liebherr LTM 1350-6.1 TYN and the Liebherr LTM 1250/1. In July 2013, a new Liebherr LTM 1750-9.1 (maximum lifting capacity 750 tonnes, 9 axles) was added, which was used immediately for refurbishing the spire of the westwork of Mainz Cathedral. Over the decades, RIGA MAINZ has repeatedly drawn attention with innovations, from the Gottwald AMK 1000 mobile crane with folding outriggers to the replacement of the spire of Mainz Cathedral and award-winning transport solutions in bridge refurbishment. In recent years, the company has also featured in numerous German television reports, including heavy transports of very special cargo such as a corkscrew factory or the KATRIN spectrometer for the Karlsruhe Research Centre. Today the company operates from its headquarters in Mainz plus sites in Frankfurt and Ludwigshafen, serving the Rhine-Main and Rhine-Neckar regions and undertaking international projects.
