Overview

RingCentral is a United States-based provider of cloud communications and collaboration software. Its platform combines business telephony, team messaging, video meetings, SMS, fax, contact center functionality, application integrations, and artificial-intelligence tools in a software-as-a-service model. The company primarily serves businesses seeking to replace or modernize premise-based private branch exchange systems and fragmented communications applications. The company was founded in 1999 by Vlad Shmunis and Vlad Vendrow. It initially operated under the RingZero name and focused on communications services for small businesses using Microsoft Windows. RingCentral later developed a broader hosted business-phone offering and attracted venture financing from investors including Sequoia Capital, Khosla Ventures, Scale Venture Partners, DAG Ventures, Cisco, and Silicon Valley Bank. By 2011, the business had reportedly secured approximately $45 million in investment capital. It completed its initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange in September 2013 and conducted a follow-on offering in March 2014. RingCentral expanded beyond hosted voice through product development, partnerships, and acquisitions. The 2015 acquisition of Glip added persistent team collaboration, document sharing, tasks, and event-management capabilities. Acquisitions of Dimelo and Connect First broadened the company’s omnichannel and customer-engagement capabilities, while DeepAffects and Kindite contributed speech-intelligence and encryption technology. The company also developed strategic distribution relationships with Avaya, Mitel, Vodafone, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, and other technology providers. In 2018, RingCentral became a founding partner of San Francisco’s Chase Center and the exclusive cloud communications provider of the Golden State Warriors. The company’s product portfolio has been organized around unified communications as a service, contact center as a service, and intelligent interaction-management tools. RingEX provides the core unified communications environment, including cloud telephony, messaging, meetings, SMS, fax, routing, call controls, and integrations. RingCX extends the platform into customer service and contact center operations. RingCentral’s AI products use speech recognition, natural-language processing, generative AI, and conversation analytics to assist agents, summarize interactions, identify trends, and automate routine call handling. Its AI Receptionist product is designed to answer inbound calls, understand caller intent, route requests, send confirmations, and provide transcripts and analytics. RingCentral has also pursued embedded and channel-based distribution. RingCentral for Microsoft Teams integrates cloud PBX, dialing, SMS, and fax capabilities into Microsoft’s collaboration interface. Vodafone Business UC combines RingCentral’s messaging and video capabilities with Vodafone’s fixed and mobile voice services in selected European markets. In 2023, the company announced broader availability of its unified communications and contact center capabilities through AWS and stated that it had become the first global cloud provider to offer fully compliant cloud phone-system services in India. Vlad Shmunis has served both as founder and chief executive, with Tarek Robbiati taking the CEO position in 2023 before Shmunis returned to the role in 2024.

History

RingCentral was established in 1999 by Vlad Shmunis and Vlad Vendrow. Its early identity was RingZero, and its initial focus was on delivering communications tools for small businesses operating on Microsoft Windows. The company subsequently developed a hosted business-phone model intended to provide enterprise-style calling features without requiring customers to purchase and maintain traditional premise-based PBX equipment. RingCentral raised its first venture capital round in 2006. By 2011, reported investment in the company had reached approximately $45 million, with Cisco and Silicon Valley Bank among the investors mentioned in company histories. The business went public on the New York Stock Exchange in September 2013. A follow-on offering in March 2014 raised a further $39.8 million, providing additional capital for product development and expansion. The company broadened its communications proposition through acquisitions and strategic partnerships. In 2015, RingCentral acquired Glip, a persistent workstream collaboration service whose messaging, file-sharing, task, and event features were incorporated into RingCentral’s wider platform. In 2018, it acquired Dimelo, a Paris-based provider of omnichannel contact center technology. Connect First, acquired in 2019, added outbound and blended customer-engagement capabilities. DeepAffects, acquired in 2020, contributed speech-recognition and intelligence technology, while Kindite, acquired in 2021, added encryption expertise. RingCentral also acquired Hopin’s audience-engagement technology business in 2023 to strengthen its video and event-related capabilities. Partnerships became another important route to market. In 2018, RingCentral became a founding partner of Chase Center and the Golden State Warriors’ exclusive cloud communications provider. In 2020, it worked with Avaya to introduce Avaya Cloud Office. In 2021, RingCentral and Mitel formed an exclusive UCaaS partnership, allowing Mitel users to access RingCentral’s cloud platform. The company also developed integrations with Microsoft Teams and other business applications, helping customers use RingCentral telephony and contact center functions inside existing productivity environments. The COVID-19 period accelerated demand for remote communications and coincided with the launch of RingCentral Video in April 2020 and the integrated RingCentral MVP application in May of that year. These products combined meetings with messaging and business telephony. RingCentral continued adding AI and analytics capabilities, including the RingSense platform announced in 2023 and later described as AI Conversation Expert. The company also expanded distribution through AWS and established Vodafone Business UC deployments in Italy and Portugal. RingCentral announced in 2023 that it had become the first global cloud provider to offer fully compliant cloud phone-system services in India. Tarek Robbiati became CEO in August 2023, and founder Vlad Shmunis returned to the position in 2024. More recent product development has emphasized artificial intelligence, including RingCX contact center capabilities, RingCX integration with Salesforce Service Cloud Voice, and AI Receptionist, a voice-first system for automated call answering, intent recognition, routing, messaging, transcription, and analytics. RingCentral’s current strategy therefore combines its established unified communications base with contact center, embedded integrations, global channel partnerships, and AI-assisted customer and employee workflows.
