Overview

Rithum is an online commerce operations software company formed from the combination of CommerceHub and ChannelAdvisor. Its platform is intended for brands, retailers, suppliers, distributors, and marketplace operators that need to coordinate product information, inventory, orders, fulfillment, and performance data across a fragmented digital commerce environment. Rather than operating primarily as a consumer-facing marketplace, Rithum provides the infrastructure and workflow software used by companies that sell through marketplaces, webstores, first-party retail programs, and drop-ship arrangements. The company’s origins trace to CommerceHub, which was established in 1997 to improve electronic communication between retailers and their trading partners. Founder Frank Poore identified a need for more flexible ecommerce integration as retailers and manufacturers began using virtual-merchant and drop-shipping models. Traditional electronic data interchange systems were often difficult to adapt to the varied file formats, business rules, and transaction volumes associated with emerging online retail. CommerceHub therefore developed web-based connectivity and translation tools that could normalize purchase orders, order changes, shipment information, remittance confirmations, and related supply-chain messages across different systems. CommerceHub expanded from connectivity into operational management. In 1998 it added drop-ship fulfillment services, including order tracking, exception monitoring, and event management. Its early customer base included major retailers and online commerce businesses, and the company reported becoming profitable in 2002 after signing several large retailers. CommerceHub was acquired by QK Holdings in 2006, later became a public company in 2016, and was taken private by GTCR and Sycamore Partners in 2018. It subsequently acquired DSCO in 2020, broadening its capabilities in supplier and drop-ship commerce, while Insight Partners acquired a majority stake later that year. ChannelAdvisor, founded in 2001 and based in Morrisville, North Carolina, developed a complementary cloud platform for managing product listings, digital advertising, sales, and operations across online marketplaces and other ecommerce channels. CommerceHub completed its acquisition of ChannelAdvisor in November 2022 in a take-private transaction. The deal brought together CommerceHub’s retailer, supplier, fulfillment, and connectivity infrastructure with ChannelAdvisor’s multichannel listing, advertising, and marketplace-management capabilities. In December 2023, the combined business adopted the Rithum name. The rebranding was intended to unify the legacy CommerceHub and ChannelAdvisor offerings under a broader connected-commerce identity. Rithum’s marketplace-listing tools are designed to distribute and maintain catalog content across numerous retail and marketplace destinations, while also helping users identify listing errors and manage channel-specific updates. Its retailer-oriented functionality supports drop-ship programs through purchase-order acceptance, shipment notifications, invoicing, inventory feeds, and related workflow automation. The platform also includes delivery and performance capabilities. These include delivery-date prediction, shipping optimization, operational reporting, and analytics intended to help commerce organizations understand channel performance and improve execution. Rithum has cited companies such as Adidas, Best Buy, The Home Depot, and Zalando among its customers or partners. In 2025, the company announced RithumIQ, an artificial-intelligence engine intended to provide recommendations and operational insights within commerce workflows. It also announced a partnership with Stripe concerning agentic-commerce use cases, combining catalog and order capabilities with payment infrastructure. Rithum’s positioning is therefore centered on the software layer between commerce participants, rather than on owning inventory or selling directly to consumers.

History

Rithum’s history combines the development of two ecommerce software businesses: CommerceHub and ChannelAdvisor. CommerceHub was formed in 1997 in New York to address the growing need for electronic integration between retailers, manufacturers, suppliers, and online merchants. At the time, many emerging virtual merchants relied on drop shipping, in which a retailer accepted an order while a supplier fulfilled it. Frank Poore, a logistics specialist familiar with retailer order-management systems, recognized that this model required faster and more adaptable communication than traditional supply-chain arrangements commonly provided. CommerceHub developed a web-based integration approach centered on its Universal Connection Hub. The system translated and normalized information exchanged among trading partners, supporting purchase orders, order changes, remittance confirmations, and other supply-chain events in multiple formats. Its connectivity options included web, VPN, value-added networks, FTP, web services, HTTPS, EDI, XML, flat files, spreadsheets, and other methods. This flexibility was important because ecommerce participants often operated different technical systems and followed different file structures and business rules. In 1998, CommerceHub added drop-ship fulfillment services. DropShip Master provided tools for monitoring order progress, tracking fulfillment events, and generating exception alerts according to configurable rules. The company received a multimillion-dollar investment from Interactive Technology Holdings in August 2000 and announced a contract with iQVC, QVC’s online retailing division, to automate electronic business communications between iQVC and participating vendors. CommerceHub reported reaching profitability in 2002 after signing four major retailers. By 2003 it had added ten large ecommerce retailers, and in 2004 it stated that its integrated network was approaching one thousand organizations representing almost one million product SKUs. QK Holdings acquired CommerceHub in an all-cash transaction announced in August 2006. That year Stephen Hamlin, previously a QVC.com operations executive, became chief executive officer. CommerceHub later became publicly traded on Nasdaq in 2016. In May 2018, GTCR and Sycamore Partners acquired the company for approximately $1.1 billion and took it private. CommerceHub expanded through the acquisition of DSCO, a Utah-based supplier and drop-ship commerce company, in November 2020. In December of the same year, Insight Partners acquired a majority stake in CommerceHub in a transaction reported at approximately $1.9 billion. ChannelAdvisor followed a related but distinct path. Founded in 2001 and headquartered in Morrisville, North Carolina, it built cloud-based tools for brands and retailers selling through online marketplaces and other digital channels. Its capabilities included product-listing management, digital advertising, catalog distribution, and multichannel sales operations. ChannelAdvisor’s software addressed the difficulty of maintaining accurate product content, pricing, inventory, and orders across many destinations. CommerceHub completed its acquisition of ChannelAdvisor in November 2022. The transaction combined CommerceHub’s retailer, supplier, integration, drop-ship, and delivery capabilities with ChannelAdvisor’s marketplace and multichannel commerce technology. In December 2023, the combined organization rebranded as Rithum. The new identity was intended to bring the two product portfolios together as a connected-commerce platform rather than presenting them as separate legacy businesses. Under the Rithum name, the company has continued to develop tools for marketplace listings, retailer integrations, drop-ship operations, fulfillment coordination, delivery management, and performance reporting. Its Marketplace Listings functionality is designed to distribute and maintain product information across many marketplaces and retail destinations, with automation for channel updates and diagnostics for listing problems. Retailer-facing workflows support purchase-order acceptance, shipment notifications, invoicing, inventory feeds, and other supplier communications. In 2025, Rithum expanded its stated technology direction through RithumIQ, an AI engine for recommendations and operational insights, and through a Stripe partnership associated with agentic commerce. The business remains focused on enterprise commerce infrastructure and does not primarily function as a consumer marketplace.
