Overview

The Ritz Theatre is a historic atmospheric movie palace in Corpus Christi, Texas, opened on Christmas Day 1929. Designed by St. Louis architect Scott Dunne in an Art Deco style with Spanish Renaissance influences, it was built as South Texas's first theatre designed for both talking pictures and vaudeville. Its elaborate interior seated around 1,300 people and featured a Spanish courtyard façade, an illuminated sky, and cloud machines that projected moving clouds across the ceiling. Opening-day patrons paid 30 cents for adults and 10 cents for children to see "It's a Great Life," starring the Duncan Sisters. After decades as a movie house, the Ritz ceased regular film scheduling in 1972. It reopened in 1974 as the Ritz Music Hall, hosting major music acts including Willie Nelson, Jimmy Buffett, Bruce Springsteen, Waylon Jennings, The Pointer Sisters, and Metallica. The venue later fell into disuse, and today it is owned by The Ritz Theatre, Inc., a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to revitalize the historic 1929 theatre and develop vibrant spaces for performing arts, culture, and education. The organization is governed by a board of directors and led by Executive Director Art Seago, with staff including Development and Program Manager Jillian Becquet and Education Manager Brianna Hoelscher. Current programming includes concerts, film screenings, and community events such as the Coastal Bend debut of "The PVIL Story: Separate...but Equal?" and performances by The Texas Bluesmen. The Ritz is positioned as a South Texas cultural and entertainment landmark undergoing rehabilitation.

History

The Ritz Theatre opened on Christmas Day 1929 in Corpus Christi, Texas, just three months after the stock market crash that began the Great Depression. Designed by St. Louis architect Scott Dunne as an "image of fantasy," it blended Art Deco style with Spanish Renaissance influences. The interior, which seated around 1,300, featured a Spanish courtyard façade and an illuminated sky. Two cloud machines mounted on turrets near the ceiling projected moving clouds, and stars twinkled in the sky to enhance the magical atmosphere. The decorator was Peckenpaugh Construction Co. The lobby was a two-story open space with a mezzanine balcony that circled the room. Critics declared the Ritz "one of the finest in the state" and "one of the largest." The first show was "It's a Great Life," starring the Duncan Sisters, presented by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer with selected shorts. Ticket prices were 30 cents for adults and 10 cents for children, later raised to 50 cents for the lower floor. The Ritz was the first theatre built as a "talking" movie theatre and vaudeville house in South Texas. During World War II, big-name bands entertained military personnel and the local community. As "Big Screen" movies arrived, theatre management stripped many embellishments to make room for larger screens, including the ornate proscenium and the permanent framed opening around the stage. The Ritz continued to thrive until the last regular scheduling of films in 1972. It reopened as The Ritz Music Hall in 1974 and featured acts such as Willie Nelson, Jimmy Buffett, Bruce Springsteen, Waylon Jennings, The Pointer Sisters, and Metallica. Today, The Ritz Theatre, Inc., a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, owns the venue. Its mission is to revitalize the historic 1929 Ritz Theatre and develop vibrant spaces for performing arts, culture, and education. The organization is governed by a board of directors and led by Executive Director Art Seago. Current programming includes concerts, film screenings, and community events, and the theatre is undergoing rehabilitation to reclaim its place as a South Texas cultural and entertainment landmark.
