Overview

Rubner is a South Tyrolean family-owned timber group headquartered in Kiens (Chienes) in the Italian province of South Tyrol. Its roots go back to 1926, when Josef Rubner Senior built a water-powered sawmill in Kiens. Over four generations the family business has grown into an international group spanning the entire wood value chain — from forestry and sawmilling to engineered wood products, glued laminated timber (BSH), cross-laminated and solid wood panels, timber engineering and construction, prefabricated timber houses, doors and windows. The group operates under the umbrella of Rubner Holding AG and includes companies such as Rubner Holzindustrie, Nordpan, Rubner Ingenieurholzbau, Rubner Haus, holzius, Rubner Türen and Rubner Fenster. According to the group's own information, Rubner employs around 1,500 people at 18 locations in four countries — Italy, Austria, Germany and France — and reported revenue of about 417 million euros in 2024. Its operations range from processing round timber from regional, sustainably managed forests into high-quality wood products to delivering large-scale timber construction projects internationally. The group positions itself around the vision of "uncompromisingly healthy building with wood" and the promise "We make the best of wood." Rubner's product portfolio covers sawn timber, glued laminated timber, solid wood panels, plywood and engineered wood components, as well as complete timber buildings, low-energy houses, doors and windows. Its customers include the construction industry, architects, developers and private homeowners. The company is privately held by the Rubner family and is now led by the fourth generation. It has received recognition such as the Dale Carnegie Leadership Award in 2008.

History

Rubner's history began in 1926, when Josef Rubner Senior built a water-powered sawmill in Kiens in South Tyrol (Italy). In 1960 his sons Paul, Pepe and Hermann joined the family timber business. The company diversified in the 1960s: production of wooden doors started in Kiens in 1964, followed by log house production there in 1966. In 1974 Rubner Holzbau was founded in Brixen and production of glued laminated timber (BSH) began. In 1985 the company started producing Rubner Residenz low-energy houses in Kiens. In 1994 Rubner took over the company Nordpan in Olang, and in 1996 it acquired Rubner Holzindustrie in Styria, Austria, expanding it into a modern sawmill. Between 2004 and 2005 the three founders Paul, Pepe and Hermann Rubner died. In 2005 the third generation — Stefan, Peter, Joachim and Alfred Rubner — took over the company. In 2006 Rubner acquired Glöckel Holzbau in Ober-Grafendorf and started a new BSH production line. In 2008 the Nordpan solid wood panel plant in Strassen, Austria, went into operation, and the company received the Dale Carnegie Leadership Award. In 2012 the Rubner Haus and Rubner Türen competence center opened in Kiens and the new Nordlam 2.0 BSH production line was commissioned. Today the group operates under Rubner Holding AG with around 1,500 employees at 18 locations in Italy, Austria, Germany and France, and reported revenue of about 417 million euros in 2024.
