Overview

Rusty Records is an Italian independent record label founded in 1968 by Gianni Rugginenti as the record arm of Rugginenti Editore, a Milanese publishing house established the same year. The label is headquartered in Milan and operates primarily in the Italian music market. In its early decades it was active in producing young rock singer-songwriters, as well as classical and inspirational music. In 1996, Maurizio Rugginenti, son of Gianni, took over the label and steered its output toward popular music (musica leggera). A turning point came in 2008 with the arrival of artistic producer Davide Maggioni, after which the label committed itself to promoting emerging artists with a 360-degree approach. Rusty Records achieved national prominence when Antonio Maggio won the Sanremo Giovani competition in 2013. The label has since been associated with artists such as Tazenda, Chiara Dello Iacovo (second place at Sanremo Giovani 2016), Tecla (Sanremo Giovani 2020), and Vittoria (Area Sanremo 2021). It remains an active independent label focused on discovering and developing young Italian talent.

History

Rusty Records was founded in 1968 by Gianni Rugginenti as the independent record label of Rugginenti Editore, a Milanese publishing house established in the same year. In the 1970s the label was very active in producing young rock singer-songwriters, but also followed other areas such as classical and inspirational music. Among the early successful groups launched by Rusty were the Mnogaja Leta Quartet, a vocal quartet specialising in gospel and spiritual music; in the same years (1968–1971) five anthology albums of Silvana Fioresi were released with re-recordings of her repertoire (arranged by maestro Dino D'Alba) and records of sacred music by maestro Marcello Giombini. In the following decade the label moved towards progressive rock, releasing records by groups such as Lydia e gli Hellua Xenium and the Lecco sextet Messaggio 73, as well as Christian-inspired singer-songwriters like Roberto Bignoli. In 1996, Gianni's son Maurizio Rugginenti took over the label, orienting its musical productions towards popular music (musica leggera). In 2008, the meeting with artistic producer Davide Maggioni marked a definitive turning point for the Milanese label, which committed itself to enhancing the quality of each of its productions. Very active in the emerging music scene, its mission is to bring young talents to light, working 360 degrees on each artist. The first important results arrived very soon: the victory at Sanremo Giovani 2013 with Antonio Maggio brought Rusty Records into the upper echelons of the record industry, confirming its organisational capacity and the competence of its artistic staff. Among the numerous discoveries the label can boast are a very young Veronica De Simone (The Voice), Carola Campagna (The Voice), Chiara Dello Iacovo (second place at Sanremo Giovani 2016, The Voice, and winner of two awards at Musicultura 2015 – critics' award and best interpretation), Attika (Amici), Manuel Foresta (The Voice), Andrea Maestrelli (Premio Lunezia 2014), Diego Conti (Sanremo Giovani 2019 and X-Factor X), and Tecla (Sanremo Giovani 2020). The growing credibility of the label is confirmed by the choice of major Italian music artists who select it to make themselves known. The label remains active and continues to promote emerging Italian talent.
