Overview
The Saracen's Head is a family-run six-bedroom Georgian inn in north Norfolk, on the edge of Wolterton Park. It was originally built by G S Repton for Horatio Walpole in 1806 in the style of an Italian farmhouse. Owners Tim and Janie Elwes took over the inn in 2010 after running luxury hotels in the French Alps for 12 years. The inn offers rooms, a restaurant and a bar, with a focus on local, seasonal food and a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere.
History
The Saracen's Head was originally built by G S Repton for Horatio Walpole in 1806, in the style of an Italian farmhouse, as a sidekick to the neighbouring Wolterton Hall. Tim and Janie Elwes took over the inn in 2010, after successfully running luxury hotels in the French Alps for 12 years. Tim was brought up in neighbouring Burgh and had previously worked in London in the 1980s as a booking agent in the music industry. The couple met on a skiing holiday, married in 1995, and ran resort hotels with Janie as chef and Tim as front of house. Since taking over, they have updated the rooms, restaurant and bar while remaining true to the original character of the property.
