Overview

SAT-Amikaro (full French name: Union des Travailleurs Espérantistes de Langue Française; in Esperanto: Unuiĝo de Franclingvaj Esperantistaj Laboristoj) is a French association of Esperanto-speaking workers, founded in 1945. It is the French-language affiliate of the worldwide non-national Esperanto organization Sennacieca Asocio Tutmonda (SAT), linked to it by the Gothenburg Convention. Its stated purpose is to spread and teach Esperanto among Francophones who strive for a world without exploitation of any kind, and to open access to SAT for those who wish to participate in its goals. The association specializes in four essential areas related to Esperanto: information, teaching, publishing of information, documentation and study materials, and a book-service (libroservo). It maintains a network of correspondents, teachers and facilitators across most French departments, as well as in French-speaking Belgium, Romandy Switzerland, and several Francophone African countries. Its headquarters is located at 134 boulevard Auriol, 13th arrondissement of Paris. SAT-Amikaro offers Esperanto courses at its headquarters and by correspondence, for all levels from beginners to experienced speakers. Its book service sells books, CDs (in connection with Vinilkosmo), posters, stickers, T-shirts and postcards, both at the Paris headquarters and by mail order, with an annual catalogue. The association publishes several works, most famously the Cours Rationnel d'Espéranto, first issued in 1921 and still sold in its tenth edition, as well as the Junul-kurso, a French-Esperanto pocket dictionary, and a practical French-Esperanto dictionary. SAT-Amikaro exists under its current name since 1937, continuing a line of predecessor associations: the Fédération des Espérantistes Révolutionnaires (1921), the Fédération Espérantiste Ouvrière (1923), and the Fédération Espérantiste du Travail (1936). Its first members were the Francophone founding members of SAT, including Eugène Lanti, Louis Glodeau and Lucien Bannier. The association is also a member of the Association des amis de la Commune de Paris and of April, and maintains links with the Union pacifiste, the Citoyens du Monde, the Fédération nationale de la libre pensée, and the Ligue des droits de l'Homme, among others. It co-directs the Institut français d'espéranto with Espéranto-France.

History

SAT-Amikaro is the continuation of a series of French workers' Esperanto organizations. The Fédération des Espérantistes Révolutionnaires was founded in 1921, followed by the Fédération Espérantiste Ouvrière in 1923 and the Fédération Espérantiste du Travail in 1936. The association has existed under the name SAT-Amikaro since 1937. Its first members were the Francophone founding members of SAT, the worldwide non-national Esperanto organization, including Eugène Lanti, Louis Glodeau and Lucien Bannier. Federal congresses were held successively in Orléans (1921), Troyes (1922), Saint-Denis (1923), Rouen (1924), Lyon (1925), Paris (1926), Ivry (1927), Bourges (1928), Saint-Étienne (1929), Saint-Denis (1930), Nancy (1931), Brussels (1932) and Lyon (1933). The emblematic Cours Rationnel, an Esperanto method still sold today in its tenth edition, was first published in 1921, explicitly aimed at a proletarian audience and clearly placed on the terrain of class struggle. The official website states that SAT-Amikaro was founded in 1945, which may reflect a reorganization or re-founding after the Second World War; the Wikipedia article notes the name has been in use since 1937. As a workers' Esperanto association, SAT-Amikaro is linked to SAT by the Gothenburg Convention. It is a member of the Association des amis de la Commune de Paris and of April, and maintains links with the Union pacifiste, the Citoyens du Monde, the Association d'Histoire et d'Archéologie du 20e Arrondissement de Paris (with which it organized events at La Bellevilloise), the Fédération nationale de la libre pensée, and the Ligue des droits de l'Homme. It also maintains links with other Francophone Esperanto organizations such as the Fédération espérantiste du travail (with which it participates in the Fête de l'Humanité), the Association française des cheminots pour l'espéranto, and Espéranto-France. SAT-Amikaro co-directs the Institut français d'espéranto with Espéranto-France. Several of its members are also members of political organizations such as the Fédération anarchiste, Alternative libertaire, the Parti communiste français, the Parti de gauche, the Parti socialiste, and Europe Écologie Les Verts. Today SAT-Amikaro continues its activities from its headquarters at 134 boulevard Auriol in the 13th arrondissement of Paris, offering courses, publishing, and a book service, and organizing congresses. Its 78th congress is scheduled for 2026, with registration for 2027 already being prepared.

Products and positioning

SAT-Amikaro positions Esperanto as belonging equally to anyone interested in its use, anywhere in the world, and rejects any monopoly over the language by any country, power or organization. It groups Francophone workers who wish to use Esperanto for social, pedagogical, cultural and practical purposes, and serves as the French-language diffusion organization for SAT.
