Overview

Scarium is a Brazilian publication brand dedicated to speculative fiction — science fiction, fantasy and horror — written in Portuguese. It began in May 2002 as Scarium On Line, a semi-automated website created to distribute and complement a printed magazine. Over the years the online operation grew into a distinct vehicle, and in 2005 its e-mail newsletter evolved into Scarium Info. The print magazine, Scarium MegaZine, is a quarterly title sold exclusively by subscription rather than in newsstands. The website covers non-fiction — news, reviews, articles and essays — while the printed edition focuses on fiction. The operation is based in Rio de Janeiro and is led by editor and webmaster Marco A. M. Bourguignon, with a small editorial team that has included co-editor Giulia Moon, co-editor Gabriel Boz and journalist Lara Chateaubriand. Scarium started as a fanzine and became a semiprozine, an independent publication with professional quality. It is one of the few Brazilian print outlets regularly publishing new authors of fantastic literature in Portuguese. The brand encompasses the website, the newsletter and the quarterly magazine, and it also distributes some e-books. Its editor has publicly noted that the magazine is sometimes overlooked by parts of the local science fiction and fantasy fandom.

History

Scarium began in May 2002 as Scarium On Line, a website with a semi-automatic update structure. Its initial purpose was to serve as a distribution channel and complement to printed editions, but over the years it gained enough prominence to diversify and become a separate vehicle. In 2005, the evolution of its e-mail newsletter led to the creation of Scarium Info. Unlike the printed edition, which is dedicated solely to fiction, Scarium On Line focuses on non-fiction, publishing news, reviews and articles about science fiction, horror, fantasy and mystery literature. Scarium On Line, Scarium Info and Scarium MegaZine are produced in Rio de Janeiro. Marco A. M. Bourguignon is the editor and webmaster. The website is divided into sections: News, Fiction, Non-fiction, E-books, Editions, Editorial Blog. The print magazine, Scarium MegaZine, is a quarterly publication sold exclusively by subscription. Having started as a fanzine, Scarium became a semiprozine with a small fixed editorial team. It is practically the only printed publication of some expression in Brazil disseminating new authors of fantastic literature in Portuguese. The editor has complained that the magazine is being ignored by some sectors of science fiction and fantasy fans. There is speculation that, due to printing costs, the publication may eventually convert entirely into an e-zine, absorbing the print parent.
