Overview

Scelta TV was an Italian magazine dedicated to local television programming information, founded by brothers Ugo and Davide Consolazione. It first appeared on newsstands in the last week of 1976 and for six full years published the schedules of all private television stations in the Lazio region. The first issue was dated 28 December 1976 but actually reached newsstands on 30 December, which allowed the magazine to label mid-1977 as 'year II'. For a very brief period the publishers attempted to launch their own television station in Rome, called Scelta TV Television, but after a short trial they chose instead to buy programming slots on existing Rome broadcasters. In 1978, officially its third year, the magazine began publishing 'Monoscopi da Collezione' (collectible monoscopes), a series of national and foreign television monoscopes and logos, issued three per week. The initiative was suspended at the start of the following year (officially the fourth) and resumed with issue 40, continuing until issue 47 of the next year, publishing one monoscope or logo per week. In total 189 images were published, 129 of them in the first series. The fourth cover corners featured four monoscopes/logos of the main Rome broadcasters of the time: TVR Voxson, P.T.S. RadioTelevisione, T.R.E. Tele Roma Europa and Quinta Rete. The magazine was published until 9 April 1983 (officially its eighth year), with issue no. 14 in the week of 3–9 April 1983. With the magazine's closure, the publishing house F.lli Consolazione Editori also ceased activity. The years of publication coincided with a period when Rome's private television stations had gained considerable importance, often reporting local news more promptly and accurately. Low-cost magazines like Scelta TV in Rome served to inform the public about their programming, which was not covered by newspapers. Later, with the rise of Fininvest's national television channels and improved local event coverage by Rai, the share of Rome's local television stations declined considerably and the magazine lost its raison d'être. The publisher's archive was dispersed and only a minimal part of what was printed and published could be recovered.

History

Scelta TV was founded by brothers Ugo and Davide Consolazione and first appeared on newsstands in the last week of 1976. The first issue carried the date 28 December 1976 but was actually distributed on 30 December, a quirk that allowed the magazine to mark mid-1977 as the start of 'year II'. For a very brief period the publishers attempted to open their own television station in Rome, called Scelta TV Television, but after a short experimental phase they decided instead to purchase programming slots on already-established Rome broadcasters. In 1978, officially the third year of publication, the magazine began a series called 'Monoscopi da Collezione', a collection of national and foreign television monoscopes and logos, released in groups of three each week. This initiative was suspended at the beginning of the following year (officially the fourth) and then resumed with issue 40, continuing until issue 47 of the next year, with one monoscope or logo published per week. In total 189 images were published, 129 of them in the first series. The fourth cover corners displayed four monoscopes/logos of the main Rome broadcasters of the era: TVR Voxson, P.T.S. RadioTelevisione, T.R.E. Tele Roma Europa and Quinta Rete. The magazine was published until 9 April 1983 (officially the eighth year), with issue no. 14 in the week of 3–9 April 1983. With the cessation of the magazine, the publishing house F.lli Consolazione Editori also ended its activity. The years in which the magazine was published correspond to a period when Rome's private television stations had reached a certain importance, for example reporting local news more promptly and accurately. Low-cost magazines such as Scelta TV in Rome served to inform the public about their programming, which was not covered by daily newspapers. Later, with the rise of Fininvest's national television channels and improved coverage of local events by Rai, the audience share of Rome's local television stations declined considerably and the magazine lost its raison d'être. The publisher's archive was dispersed and only a minimal part of what was printed and published could be recovered.
