Overview
Scherdel GmbH is a German family-owned industrial group specialising in metal forming, assembly and joining technology, machine and tool making, and surface technology. Founded in 1890 by Sigmund Scherdel in Marktredwitz as a wire-drawing mill for piano strings, the company soon moved into technical springs and grew into one of the world's leading suppliers of precision spring and metal components. Its most important product is valve springs for combustion engines, and it is the global market leader for springs used in oil-scraper rings. The group operates more than 30 locations in around 11 countries and employs over 6,800 people worldwide. Scherdel describes itself as a medium-sized, owner-managed family business guided by the principle "Fortschritt aus Tradition" (progress through tradition). Its portfolio spans forming technology, assembly and joining technology, surface technology, and the design and construction of machines, tools and automated systems. While the automotive sector remains its core market, Scherdel has expanded into medical technology, electrical engineering and energy technology. The company runs its own research and development centre, opened in 2008, and supports customers from initial briefing through to series production. Internationalisation began in 1986 and accelerated in the 2000s with a new plant in Anqing, China (2007), investments in Russia (2010), and a broad network of production and engineering sites across Europe, Asia and the Americas. Scherdel remains privately held by the founding family and is headquartered in Marktredwitz, Bavaria. Its engineering subsidiaries include MECO, WEMA, WEKO, INCO, COMET, Hamuel Reichenbacher, Kanya, SMB, Perfektion Maschinenbau, Zarian, AFEMA, WAL and TPS, covering tool making, design, machine building, automation and hybrid manufacturing.
History
Scherdel was founded in 1890 by Sigmund Scherdel in Marktredwitz, Germany, as a wire-drawing mill producing piano strings. The company soon began processing wire into technical springs, a move that laid the foundation for its later industrial focus. By 1940, Scherdel had achieved an 80% market share in Germany for its spring products, establishing itself as a dominant domestic supplier. Over the following decades, Scherdel gradually broadened its product range and began exporting abroad. The year 1986 marked the beginning of the company's internationalisation, as it started to establish operations and sales outside Germany. In 2007, Scherdel built a new plant in Anqing, China, expanding its manufacturing footprint into Asia. In 2008, the company inaugurated a research and development centre that also provides customer services; that same year, its export share stood at around 50%. In 2010, Scherdel made investments in Russia, further extending its international presence. At the end of 2021, the Wiesauplast group was taken over by Indus Holding AG, a transaction that affected part of Scherdel's broader corporate environment. Today, the Scherdel Group operates 35 locations in 11 countries and employs more than 6,800 people worldwide. Its product portfolio has evolved from simple technical springs to a broad spectrum of metal-forming, assembly and joining, surface technology, tool making, machine and plant engineering, automation and hybrid manufacturing. Key subsidiaries and brands include MECO, WEMA, WEKO (tool making), INCO and COMET (design), Hamuel Reichenbacher, Kanya, SMB and Perfektion Maschinenbau (machine and plant engineering), Zarian and AFEMA (automation), and WAL and TPS (hybrid manufacturing). The company remains a family-owned, owner-managed business headquartered in Marktredwitz, Bavaria.
