History

Schikaneder Kino is a multi-purpose venue in Vienna that houses an experimental and independent cinema, a stage and the adjacent schikaneder Bar. Its name goes back to Emanuel Schikaneder, who wrote the libretto of Mozart's 'The Magic Flute' and often performed the role of Papageno. The venue states that it is the second-oldest, or the oldest continuously operating, program cinema in Vienna, in operation since 1912. Under the direction of Johannes Wegenstein, who transformed 'the small Schikaneder' into today's schikaneder, the venue recently celebrated its 20th anniversary.
